My Philopsophy class has aborded the first chapter's question that leaves us to philosophize:
Is a mythical story (as in a founding story for religion and many things) true simply because we give it a lot of importance (or value)?

Ya can't answer it without someone else saying completely the opposite and it takes pages of reading on their theory of it (or thinking for ourselves for a good while alone)before we can answer this one.

What are the major differences between the Bahai' and Muslim faith?

- Whoops, I didin't see that Williamette posted something on this matter. Oh well, it wouldn't hurt to hear Scamtron's version.

i'd love to talk about religion, but i won't be doing that. i can pretty much talk about anything, but religion. i simply don't have the integrity to carry out a conversation based on religion without getting extremely pissed off. its a shame, its the ONLY thing i'm so sensitive about.

Williamette, what is your religious affiliation?

P.S. I hope no troll comes in here and turns this perfectly harmless & peaceful thread into relgious flame war. I'll be PO'd if someone comes and does that.

I know exactly what you mean Eden. Theres so many open-ended questions that can go on forever and ever, and people can have 100% opposite views, and each side may have things that support what he/she says. Thats why I don't usually like to talk about religious stuff because *most* people already have their minds set and its hard to change anyones mind about that.

And UFO I am a Christian (non-denominational).

Denominations lol, a whole-nother discussion.

My history teacher at my HS (I'm a junior) was talking about religion, but he was saying things that were totally biased, or even untrue (hes an athiast btw, was pretty much bashing all religions in a 'nice' way so he wouldn't get fired).

He was also quite confused about Christianity and how its split up into Catholocism and Protestantism, and the sub-denominations. Everyone in the class was totally clueless however, so I neglected to argue with him.

After this one last question, I'll say no more about the subject. What is the Holy Text of the Bahai, faith, the Holy Qu'ran? Just curious so I can do more research about it. Personally, I really enjoy learning about the religions of the world. However, If it offends you to discuss the issue of religion, I understand and I'll respect that because most people are indeed very sensitive about this sort of issue. If there is multiple texts, could you point the others out as well?

http://www.bahai.org/

the book is called: al-Kitab al-Aqdas. meaning "The Most Holy Book".

this doesn't offend me. i just don't want to start a discussion about religion as it MIGHT end up offending people.

the Bahai faith has several authoritive works created by "Bahabula" (I'm sure the spelling is wrong). The Bahai faith like the Islamic faith is syncretistic in that it takes from other religions to establish it's authority. That is why it and the Bahai claim descent from Jewish and Christian Scriptures and prophets. Bahai like the Islamic faith believe in what can be called progressive revelation, meaning that the later prophet the greater the prophet or more authoritive than the earlier prophet. Even if the latter prophet is contradictory to the earlier prophet.

The Bahai have been severley persecuted by the Muslims over the centuries because using the same argument that Mohammed based the Quran upon (the later the propeht the greater the prophet) Was considered very bad by the Moslems. I am writing from my perspective as a Christian so I am not sure if my perspective would be shared by the other faiths mentioned here.

That's weird. I didn't know Bahais spoke arabic!

I easily knew what you wrote before you translated it into The Holiest Book. (I think it means The Holy Book btw)

Well, no actually. I've never seen a GC!

I had a much better usertitle but was caught trying to hack me a better one so I got my current title as a punishment

The way many of the religions works is that there is a prophet that was spoken of in the Old Testament who will introduce or prepare for the introduction of the Messiah to the world.(I'm trying to remember the exact phrasing).

In the Christian religion John the Baptist is this prophet, and he introduces Jesus Christ to the world.

In the Muslim faith they see Jesus as a prophet and that Mohammad is the prophet spoken of in the old testament. Muslims have a different interpretation to the meaning of "Son of God", by this Jesus is supposedly saying that he is a Jew as the Jews are meant to be the children of God, they back this up by refering to Jesus also saying that he was the son of man.

All the religions stem form the Jewish belief, though the Jewish culture is of a completely different mind set in that they either believe that Jesus never exsisted or that Jesus was a charleton and that the true Prophet and Messiah have yet to appear.

wow its nice to see someone with at least some sense on here...
i don't really care what anyone drives but like I've said the FUD about American cars is an old wives tale from a time long gone.

It doesnt take a redneck or huckleberry finn to know that. :frown:

I do like some foreign companies, mainly Isuzu because they partner with General Motors.
The duramax diesel (the best diesel motor available to consumers) was a joint venture between Isuzu and GM, though I think GM bought all the properties to the duramax recently from Isuzu.

If you couldn't tell I'm a GM fanboy (haha). I defend ford also though from anti-american attacks.

Basically the proof is in history, pickup any local newspaper and find some 1980 toyota cars.. you won't see many or at least won't see any more than you will American made models.

Then check the resale values of those foriegn cars, they are usually lower than american models.. which is one of the best gauges for the quality and value of a car.

I'm just saddened by the views many hold about american cars, believe it or not but many people not only ignore the facts but some who are uber-liberal folks, ARE american haters.. the same people that said we deserved the attacks of 9/11 probably drive a foriegn car to spite something.

One final note, everyone remembers after 9/11 how no foriegn companies donated anything to the disaster victims while GM/Ford donated millions.
I mean of course they do not care but why be so bilegerant. This means nothing about the car they produces quality but just something rather annoying to us Americans.

LOL, ok.
Well your probably right, but I feel the reason for the various reasons I outlined in the last few posts.

I completely respect the fact you hated fast and furious, what a stupid movie.

But kinney in all honesty to the end of your post, the american governement did nothing to help the foreigners and their families who died in the tradegy either.
There was a reported case of an english women living in the US who's husband (an american citizen) died in the tradegy. She was allowed no access to the fund that was helping american families who'd lost the bread earner of the family, and even though he child was born in the US they threatened to export her because she had no rights to stay in the US now that her husband was dead.

So why should a foreign company help a government who won't help foreign people?

I don't think this is the current situation anymore(except for Korean Cars). In the last ten years, used foreign cars(except Korean Cars) have generally been higher priced than a competative American car. BTW, I'm looking at the prices at http://www.edmunds.com. Looking a used car lots, I've noticed the same thing. Maybe its different where you are from.

Not to attack GM, but you do know they are running a "Road to Redemption" campaign right? Here is an interesting article that you might want to look at, http://www.forbes.com/global/2003/0609/017.html

Now you can see where my "FUD" about American cars comes from. Besides, my posts were never meant to attack american cars, nor am I anti-american. Its just I feel that they aren't the best thing out there. Everybody's got their opinions right?

Well, I was hesitant to add that to my post because of the mud that it would bring into the debate.

While I can't confirm or deny your story, I'm sure stuff like that happened and its unfortunate, I'm not familiar with the laws of immigration enough to know if she was entitled to the fund money or not. I would assume she was entitled unless she hadnt earned residency yet, but I thought when you married an American you became one yourself.. (?)

Either way thats unfortunate. And I don't think the companys had storys like that in mind particularly when the decision was made to not contribute..

most "good" Americans like myself  would have been for giving your Englishwoman her dues.
I think time has shown there is a union between the United States, Britain and Israel that stands true and our peoples are sympanthetic to each others causes, which are truley chivalrous and rightous causes.. so I think your story was a mishappen issue that if was publicized more, would've been corrected.

Freakin hate talking politics (or economics) here; but since we've had religion, cars, and what all else here goes;

One final note, everyone remembers after 9/11 how no foriegn companies donated anything to the disaster victims while GM/Ford donated millions.
Ignorant and untrue.

ALOT of Canadian companies aided America (alot were headquartered in the Towers and around them including CIBC-world [bank]) and ALOT of Canadians themselves helped out (and what do we get as thanks, how about more tariffs and trade barriers, and ill-will). Also I know that one of the Japanese investment firm and the French insurer AIG both donated money and both lost people in the building (and AIG probably LOST alot of money in claims).

Personally it really PI$$E$ me off when Americans think they were the only ones affected by 9/11, the list of countries affected is longer than the OpenGL extensions we've discussed. Stop using it as an example or a crutch especially to justify Nationalistic BS!

Countries like Canada helped out during and after 9/11, but since we didn't decide to invade Iraq with you now we are the 'others' again, despite the change of view of many Americans about the war. 'You're either with us or against us is childish and stupid' and like you said it's 'Just something rather Annoying to' THE REST OF THE WORLD.

I like my American neighbours as a whole, but some of you individuals ruin it for the rest of your compatriots by being 'Ugly Americans'!

And enough of the liberal bashing. Conservatives aren't any better/different. And if you think only Liberals like foreign cars then you obviously never met wealthy conservatives most of whom drive German imports in my experience. Either that or Volvo's!

So you like American steel, fine, I prefer German or British. American Cars aren't the crap they were in the 70s, bu it doesn't mean everyone else is either. The saying F-ix O-r R-pair D-aily or F-ound O-n R-oad D-ead didn't come from the Japanese, it came from Unsatisfied N.Am (probably US) owners.
And as for resale value, check the resale value of German cars, usually retain MUCH more of their resale. But I guess you just meant Hyundai's and Daewoos; cause Honda's do well in the resale market too.

In general I'd say your frustration/anger/whatever has clouded your thoughts on this subject. I believe in buying local, but when it comes to something this expensive you will not find alot of people turning their nose up at basic buying common sense. I'll stick with JEEP, but that's because THEY offer what I want, not because America Loves ME.

- You need a licence to buy a gun, but they'll sell anyone a stamp (or internet account) ! RED GREEN GA to SK

and as far as the road to redemption campaign.. I think its simply a ploy to get people like you to buy an American car again and find out that not only are those days long gone but the FUD was overly obsessive in those days also.

do you think they really care if you feel in your heart an american car is quality? no. they want to sell you one based off PR just like your foriegn car salesman and dumbass neighbor is pumping you full of PR about the mystical secret on why their cars are better.

I'm still waiting on that secret.. is it luck?

Is it because the type of person who would buy a foriegn car is the type who knows little about cars, wants something "reliable" and is going to trade it off in 4 years anyway?
While some cowboy or a redneck like myself who realizes trading off every few years is a money losing deal unless your making bank?
And if I was making bank I'd still be as conservative with my money as I am now, FYI.

I really don't know, just spitting out ideas.. something you should try it could broaden your horizon.

Maybe they put magic beans in your foreign car?

All joking aside I've already said many logical possibilitys.
