I drive a 300someodd HP firebird.. not only do I regularly school everything on the road, I never need a tow truck.
And everything is heavier duty in an American made car, my drivetrain, tranny and most of my stock motor parts can handle about 450HP.
Granted I have some modifications done to my motor, keith black forged pistons, ported and polished heads (they come with alum. heads from the factory), 2800stall vigilante stall converter, forged rods also... few other goodies but I could safetly and reliably throw a 100shot of n2o anytime and cream about every ricerburner or whatever your into on the road besides something with twice as much money or more in it or something way out of its class.
And as far as speed, my father is an engineer, he owns and built cars with all american parts that get 30MPG and have 1000HP... find me any european or foriegn car that can do that!
Sorry but the fast and furious movie you just saw.. if you want cars like that you have to practically replace EVERYTHING in those cheap rice rockets.
My brother builds sprint car motors for a living, guess how many foriegn parts you see winning races? zilch. They arent even included cuz they dont make anything worthy.
And the reliability thing is just an urban myth propogated by ignorance. The japs had a jump on EFI (electronic fuel injection), for one, but those days are long over.
Other than that short lived advantage, <b>I'd like to see where the supposed superiority comes from?</b> I've owned and worked on both with my own hands... I think I'd know which is better.
If you've ever actually had to work on these cars you'd know that american cars are much better designed, higher quality, much easier to fix and parts are cheaper (by far) to boot. I've owned a nissan, they are tinkertoys.
I'd also like to see a toyota tundra outwork a chevy HD with duramax diesel.... theres no comparison. While thats unfair, a tundra, or whatever consumer foriegn 'towing truck' your referring to, wouldnt even hold up to what its supposed to against its american equivilent.
So the answer to your question is, not only does the buying public not even know what VTEC is, they buy the cars because people are sheep and buy whatever their liberal buddies in NY or CA buy. And because of the FUD that people like you spread.

Gee, I could mod a car to get a high horsepower too. Hell, if you had the money you can go change a kia into a 800hp car. I'm talking about stock speeds. If you can pick and choose your own car parts, you can turn anything into a good quality, high power, car.
Obviously you are some redneck who can't accept that,in general, American cars do tend to breakdown more than Japanese or European cars. Look at some statistics.

I guess I didnt realize it took a redneck to be educated about how cars are actually built and work.
Funny thing is, my car factory had 275HP and about 300ft.lbs of torque. Even better the newer models of my car have about 320HP and 300+ torque. They run about a 13flat, under 13 w/o any motor modifications in the quarter mile.
An '87 buick grand national, though it runs about a 10second quarter mile now, with only a chip mod it ran 12s...
which also happens to be the fastest production car of '87 and IIRC '86 also.
So stock for stock from the factory I don't see where the ricers are that can beat my car alone. Unless you get something way out of its price category that no one drives.
You could argue (though I doubt you could as you odviously know little about cars...) that you could buy something like a mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, add a $10 modification that let you change the amount of boost the turbo puts out and have a mid 13sec. maybe circa 12sec. quarter mile car for around the price of mine.. but again the rear end, tranny, which is a very weak 4wheel drive tranny that is not only VERY expensive to fix but also nets a loss 20% of the cars HP to begin with.. it won't run those great numbers on the street or track very long at all until something breaks and you end up replacing everything.
Thats just an example but basically the common scenario when comparing your average foreign car to an american.
Point being, again, with most american cars you get heavier duty and higher quality parts all around.
While I didnt say ALL american cars are superior to everything else they are generally better, you seem to believe that simply because a car ISN'T American that its better. Which is the most silly thing I've heard, but not uncommon.

However with very lean modifications you can make a Nissan Skyline GTR-R32 reach 1,200 BHP, yess that's 1-2-0-0. I prefer British or German Steel, especially a TVR. In any case, there are tons of those types of cars out there from all over the world.
And as for Pontiacs, FireHawk (made in Laval PQ) or nothing for that baody frame type IMO. Anywhoo, that's all; GW I promise not to talk cars for a while.
