Yikes! Another blow to Nvidia

Nintendo's next console will be out for last quarter 2004. XBox2 will be out 3rd quarter 2005. PS3 will be out 2005.

ATI has sales for both XBox2 and Nintendo's next gen console.

The Playstation3 will not sell as many consoles as the PS2 purely because a lot of PS2 owners also own a second console from either MS or nintendo, their PS2 being bought before either was released and now gathering dust. With the PS3 being released so close to if not later than the other 2, initial sales will be taken away and instead be given to the other 2 manufacturers. Realisitically the PS2 had a 12month sles advantage over the other 2, which will be non-exsistent next time round.
 
ATI <i>might</i> put a 9800 Pro in there...why? Because in another year it could retail as cheap as an 8500 currently does. They won't go into production for XboX2 until about a year before they intend to sell it (common practice for consoles). With microsoft it could be even later than that as the XboX/XboX2 is/might be easier to assemble and quicker to produce than the PS2/PS3 ever was/will be.

So the real question is: Everyone assumes that the 9600 costs less to produce than the 9800...this is bogus. What eveyrone forgets is that a 9600 <i><b>retails</i></b> lower than a 9800 does. This doesn't mean it costs less to produce...it just means that the 9600 sells for less. The real differential cost (production) of the cards is minimal. Minimal...that's right...it's minimal. They want you to believe that it costs alot. Believe me...I work IC's, capacitors, transistors, and programmable circuit cards everyday. I see companies overcharge everyday. It's the middle man that is getting fat here...not the manufacturer of the actual IC. If ATI wanted to, they could put a 9800 Pro in there...but why do that? They'll bottleneck it with the processor!

However, any amount of money they make from using a 9600 in it would be minimal unless they sell a buttload of consoles. But that's from a purely economical look at the chips themselves. If we're going marketing schemes...you have to add another ingredient to the mix. And that's a whole bag of crap I am not qualified to talk about.

As optimistic I am about PS3 (and XB2, for that matter), the graphics don't make the system. Otherwise, the Xbox would be a 50 million seller. ATi will not make XB2 great, as much as I love ATi. Great games will make it great. Same with PS3.

And Gastrian, you may have confused Dark Cloud (an actionRPG)with Tomb Raider, sorry for the confusion. And I still say you and phial are wrong about the PS2. There are hundreds of games that are just awesome on PS2, some that are multiplatform. Whether or not someone likes a system's games comes down to opinion, but I just can't see how you can't find more than 2 or 3 series that you like. On a side note, GT has no basis for comparison to NFS or Burnout. I own GT3, NFS HP2, and Burnout 2, and I love them all, but for very different reasons. I love the all out simulation of GT3, which is the ONLY example of a driving sim that really deserves to be called a true sim (SegaGT is decent, but still inferior), NFS is great for its real car selection and high speed chases with police (don't be fooled by the crappy versions on GC, Xbox, and PC, they were from a different developer), and Burnout has amazing speed and crashes. Like I said, this is all opinion-based, but you have to look at the situation in whole.

On final note, as I said, I love a console for its games, not its graphics, which is why I love PS2 (and certainly Xbox and GC, too, though not as much DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE AREN'T NEATLY AS MANY GREAT ONES ON THOSE PLATFORMS) and PC.

I got DarkCloud and Tombraider confused? TombRaider was a pile of expletetives Dark Cloud wasn't. That was the only comaprison I made between them, but what the hey, let by-gones be by-gones.

Whether ATI makes XBox2 great was never really under discussion, only the biggest and blindest fanboys and haters would think that the graphics chip makes all the difference. For all the consumer cares it could be a via or sis on-board graphics jobbie, as long as it plays games like Halo2 they'll be happy. What is important is what effect of who's manufacturing the GPU and the XBox2's sales as this can be a big profit area and can cause dents or rises in a companies standing and profits.

I will not dispute your opinion about what games you like. If you like the games on the PS2 and will buy a PS3 on the back of that I won't stop you unless you come into my store :). But my personal belief is that customers will see a greater quality of games on the other consoles and will opt for those instead.

Also I've just rewatched the rolling demo for Rouge Squadron3 on GC. A proper endor speeder level and a hoth battle with you in an X-Wing against close on 40 tie fighters (most in far-off) and no slow down. Looks very very good.

Have you tried Zelda Windwaker? Metroid Prime? Mario Sunshine... heck even Animal Crossing?
What about the assortment of Sonic games, the upcoming Mario Kart, Mario Party 4, Smash Bros Melee?

Almost every few titles, one pure quality comes out, for GC.
Methinks more than half I've enumerated (save for upcoming), you haven't played.

Eden, I like all those games, actually. I love Gamecube, I didn't mean to imply that I didn't. My personal favorite is the REmake of Resident Evil, though.

And Gastrian, I can't wait for Rogue Squadron, I'm good friends with one of the developers over at Factor 5. One final note, the graphics bit wasn't meant for you. And there are plenty of idiots who buy the PS2 for no good reason, but there are plenty who buy it for a meaningful reason, like me. Glad we're eye-to-eye, brotha.

Wasn't too keen on the Remake of Res Evil, it's gone the same ways as a load of the PS2 games, up the presentation but do nothing to fix the problems people have been complaining about - will they fix that f***ing control system!!!!!!!!

I'll admit there are some good reasons to buy a PS2 but there'll be fewer reasons to buy a PS3.

The presentation was indeed superb and the controls tedious, but for me, that actually upped the scare factor because it was harder to move around, thus making it harder to avoid enemies. The developers actually left the controls as such for that purpose alone.

As for PS3, I hope that you (and I) will be pleasantly surprised.

Never had much problem with XBox, The hardware is powerful and it has some good titles but they're not my type and the machine itself is very bulky and weighty for a console.
 
Rumored in the works for Xbox2 are smaller consoles & better controllers (supposedly they are listening to their users on this one). So, hopefully, with ATI coming on board they might be able to get some better support in the game variety department. I just want some competition between them and Sony...I mean...the prices just don't fall enough for me. They are making a ton of money at everyone's expense...if we have two consoles battling it out for tops...both with great graphics and great games...one will always try to undersell the other (hopefully) Bah...I failed economics and I have a small weiner.

X-Box is indeed a good machine but literally a handfull of games, I would struggle to name 5 games that I would actually want for the machine (and yes I am clue'd up on all the consoles) I had an Xbox and took it back after 5 days!....a few months later i bought a PS2 soley for GT3 and a few Jap RPG's which the other console dont have enough of if any! and I still have it. now the GameCube is a different story, whilst it may have a smaller catalogue of games than the other two it has the better games...I could name more GC games that i would go and buy than i could PS2 and Xbox put together + its cheaper, the peripherals are cheaper, the games are real quality games and not your average western sh!te that i wouldnt wish upon anyone. and there are still great games lined up its sad that Nintendo dont have a larger market share than they do (largely its own fault for releasing late, not treating western gamers with enough respect when releasing game - although this is changing).

Dont get me wrong the Xbox IS the most powerfull (It still galls me that some Xbox games look & run better than my PC which is better spec but hey what can ya do?) The PS2 is also a great machine but only a fraction on its and Xbvoxes catalogue are of any quality. Rumours of Nintendo looking to release its new console before Sony or at least almost at the same time are abundant in the japanese famitsu press and they have new younger management and have been doing better since their arrival on the scene.

If they pull this off with good titles aerly on I think the PS3 will have a battle on its hands which will hopefully help drive down prices early on. Sony commited daylight robbery on us for ages as there was no other competition around except for the Dreamcast which unforntunatley wasnt even given a chance by the public and didnt bring the price down till very late in the game. eg: on release PS2 was £299.99 without a game, memory card and only 1xJoypad. Games are £40 each and a memory card is £20 so for a console and 2 games you were looking at £400!! convert that to dollars (the £ was stronger back then too) and you have grand theft console by Sony. FF to today I bought a PS2, Xtra Joypad, EyeToy, MemCard, 5 top games, all for £280. They are still making a profit on this so why the hell cant they release the console at a lower price to start? If theyt start manufacturing early enough they cant blame the manufacturing costs!

I will be buying a GC in the near future for the likes of Zelda, Mario Sunshine, MarioKart Double Dash, Viewtiful Joe, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Super Monkey Ball 2, Soul Claibur 2, P.N.0.3 to name a but a few.

Christ I have gone on and I can barley remember what started all this. Basically Competion between THEM is good for US. I hope Nintendo can sock it to Sony as Sony's success with Ps2 has been largly built (80%) on the success of PS1 and they way it was marketed. Most d!cks who know jack sh!t about games or the console just went out and bought it because the previous one was good too!

Peace to all the Hard-Core Gamers & a Smelly bag of manuere to all you casual gamers who help rubbish games sell well by saying ooh those graphics look nice and for buying every incarnation of EA sports titles when ther is no notable difference between them. Congratulations your helping to stifle creativity and inovation and holding back truely great games from getting the recognition and sales they deserve.
