Z77 sabertooth assist fan 2 isn\'t working

Hi,

I have recently put together a PC with the new Asus Z77 sabertooth motherboard and everything runs sweet for a week. However, not till last week did I notice that the assist fan 2 located at the center of the board under cpu will not start at all.

I check the fan setting in both my BIOS and Thermal Radar software and they're both enable and shows 0 or N/A rpm. I tried to play around with the fan setting in both program, e.g. switching from standard --> turbo --> user etc, reinstalled AI suite, flashed and restored BIOS, all did not work.

I don't think it's a software issue in my OS since I unplugged the boot drive's sata cable before booting up and its (fan) still not working. The fan it self works fine just by plugging into a nornal socket/ fan controller.

Strangely, it spins after shut down, since I enable the option ( overtime fan after shut down option?).

Any suggestion will be deeply appreciated.

Ah another person with the Z77 Sabertooth dead fan mystery, quite a few people posting about a fan header or fan dying from the install of this mobo. Use another fan header and click ignore for the one that doesnt work in the bios.
Its a real mystery why this mobo just kills fans or headers.
My Chassis fan had the same issue and then it just completely died for no reason, plugged in a new fan and now the header works perfectly.
Use another fan header if you can or it may kill your fan completely.

THANKS for your input, and indeed I've come across few posts about their dead cpu/ chassis fan header. However, no one mentioned a dead small assist fan header.
I tried to plug a different fan into the assist fan 2 header, same problem. wont start at all, and again starts after shut down. so it works in some lesser degree.
Very strange indeed...

Can you try another fan on them?

Mine did the same and eventually died from plugging it back into any of the headers on the mobo.
Try another fan and see if the headers work , if they do the other fan has been sabertoothed!

Tried with two different fans and still has the same problem.
There's nothing wrong with the orignal fan, as i plugged into the case's fan controller header and works. However, by doing that I lost the ability to automatcially control the fan's rpm, which is the feature of sabertooth I paid premiums for.

I also have Z77 SaberTooth and issues with both assistant fans.

After Windows 7 boot all fans (2 CPU + 2 CASE) work properly and follow their profiles very well.
However both ASSISTANT fans stay OFF even though according to profile settings they suppose to be running.

It is safe to say that because of BIOS or THERMAL RADAR software issues system "forgets" to turn assistant fans on.

I have found a temporary cure for this.

Open Thermal Radar and go to Assist Fan profile. Then put mark "Allow Fan Stop" click Apply. Then take mark off "Allow Fan Stop" to restore previous state and click Apply again. Now BOTH assistant fans will come alive even though I only "agitate" one and stay on and follow their profiles as long as my system stays on. If I reboot computer or just windows I have to "revive" them all over again.

Must be some sort of bug with BIOS or onboard FAN CONTROLLER or THERMAL RADAR. If I was to go to bios after restart both fans stay off at all times unless "revived" by steps mentioned before using Thermal Radar.

^^ Thanks man, but I have tried that numerous times. It did fix my assist fan 1, but still not the one under the cpu

I can't seem to locate the problem, since I disconnected the boot drive before start up (eliminate the thermal radar influence).

I flashed my BIOS to older version/ original version ( eliminates BIOS problem????), reset all BIOS setting and made sure that all fans are enabled.

It's not a fans problem as it's working fine.

So, it might be a hardware issue? or so some unknown entity effing with me?

Gonna send it back for a RMA, see if they can fix the problem.

Just a quick update, got my replacement board last friday, put it together over the weekend, and all fans are working fine.

Still don't know what is the actual problem, but my suspension fall in lines of BIOS bug (corrupted my fan controller? if such term/thing exist).

Simply rather than un-marking "allow fan stop" leave it marked and then edit the fan speed percentage to whatever you feel is necessary at 0 degrees. For example I have set both of my assist fans to run at 60% at 0 degrees and then 70% at 40 degrees, I also clicked auto for the percentages referring to the thermal sensors. I have rebooted my computer several times and after about 10 seconds, possibly longer, both fans start.

Hopes this works as it has for me!

I think I MAY found the cause of the problem.

I tried to set a user setting for the assist fans last night in Thermal Armour, 30% for 20 degrees, --> 55% for 40 degrees --> 70% 60 degrees.

When I boot up again, the fan will not start, so I went into BIOS--> Advance mode--> Monitor, and found that assist fans were somehow turned off. I then selected manual, and tried to adjust the lower temperature's % cycle or load ( cant remember clearly) down to 40 from the preselected 60, and it prompts me an invalid value.

So maybe the Bios can not read a low value from user defined setting, thus turning the fan off altogether? sound logical? thoughts?

Sounds like a reasonable explanation, but I think it definitely has something to do with the user defined settings. Both my fans were working fine before I defined my own profile, somewhat irritating if that is the cause seeing as though the motherboard is quite expensive.

I found a problem. Appearently BIOS setting had assist fans OFF by default and it "over ruled" thermal radar settings. When I enabled those fans in BIOS all my issues dissapeared. All fans start now with windows as suppose to. Thank You al
