you should try the "compatibility" option by rightclicking on the game executable and select an os which it used to work on and deselect visual options. I dont know if it would solve the problem but alot of games seem to cause stability problems with winXp if it doesnt work you should try...

i've never heard of such problems with windows xp but i wouldnt be surprised of that since nearly every windows version has flaws. At my work we use Linux alot which runs much more stable than windows. But for your problem i would delete all partitions and use fdisk or the windows partition...

you can try reinstalling windows xp over it mayb it automatically fixes the corrupted files, if that doesnt work i would backup important data and format your harddisk and reinstall windows

Yea WinXp would run fine with your system, the reason why win 98 ran slow's your system down mayb the cause of your ram memory because windows 98 doesnt really works optimally with 512mb memory.If i were you i would choose Windows XP

you can try by going back to the folder option and click to reset everything to standard settings and check if everything workes normal and then try to change whatever you wanted to change
