Question “Network cable unplugged” after installing a PCIe network card ?

Hello, I just installed a network card into the PCIE 1x slot on my motherboard, which was supposed to be plug and play, and when I try to connect my CAT6A ethernet cable to it, it just reads “Network cable unplugged” under the new Ethernet option under network connections in Win 10. I was using this cable in the ethernet port on my motherboard and it was working fine so it’s not the cable. It clicked when I slid it in as well and I have refastened it several times to rule that out. I did try uninstalling the Realtek driver thru the device manager and also removing it using the realtek software but neither had any difference in results.

Shouldn't be this difficult and suspect it is faulty. Did the card come in a static bag and was taped closed?

Does the system detect something in pcie 1x slot? Carefully check inside the network port for anything abnormal.

Yeah it came in a static bag and was taped closed. The system does detect something. It comes up as a new ethernet option under the network connections list and remains there even without anything plugged into its ethernet port. And it also goes away when I remove it from the PCIE 1x slot on my motherboard. I've provided an image below of how it shows up. It seems like the system doesnt have a problem detecting that the network card is plugged into the PCIE slot but for some reason cant detect that there is an ethernet cable plugged into that network card despite the cable working fine.

It's probably showing - cable disconnected for your integrated ethernet controller.
Did you disable integrated ethernet controller in device manager?
Can you show a screenshot for ?

BTW - what's wrong with integrated? Why did you need a discrete lan card?

I tried disabling the integrated ethernet controller but it made no difference, the network card still wouldn't detect the ethernet cable. I provided a screenshot of what it looks like below. Im currently using the integrated ethernet controller to connect since it's the only one that works. I'll provide a screenshot of the ipconfig all as well. As for the reason I got a discrete lan card it's because the one that came with my motherboard is degraded and gets hard capped at 100 mbps so I decided to buy a new network card to see if it fixes it. I've tried countless solutions to that issue and it seems to indicate the problem is that my ethernet port or integrated network card is busted.

Have you tried another network cable though? Gigabit needs all functioning 8 wires, it'll default to megabit 4 wires if something is wrong with any of them or plug not crimped correctly. It's possible and more likely the cable is your issue, mobo nic could have slightly wider or deeper contacts to be the difference between barely detecting and faulting the cable.

What is ethernet3. Are you trying to run both the new ethernet card and the one on the motherboard at the same time. Do you have both have cables plugged in. Note it is messy to try to run 2 ethernet ports in one machine.

Ethenret3 seems to be fully functional and connected to the internet

Unlikely it’s the cable. I only just got it in the past 9 months and made sure to get one that’s high quality. I’ve tried it on another machine and it works flawlessly hitting 1gbps speeds. I cant conveniently try another ethernet cable on my current PC because my modem is on the opposite side of the house and we had to run the current one through the walls of the house. And it’s a desktop PC so hauling the entire thing out there is not something I want to do.

Ethernet 3 is my motherboard network card. Ethernet is my discrete network card. I’m not trying to run both at the same time and have disabled the Ethernet 3 device inside the network connections tab in prior testing and it yielded no results. If there’s something further I must do for it to be properly disabled then by all means let me know. The only reason it’s enabled and connected to the internet is because I deliberately enabled since I wouldnt have any connectivity otherwise. In all my testing it was disabled. Also not sure if you’re referring to something else when you say both cables but I only have one ethernet cable that I’m using.

When you disabled the on-board network adapter, did you do via the BIOS or just within Windows? If not the BIOS, I recommend trying that.

So the cable running through your wall, is that a recent install? Have you confirmed it works properly? It is also unlikely your motherboard network port is faulty, and a coincidence the network card is also having problems.

If other suggestions aren't working, you'll have to just do it and move your case.

I've bought and made many network cables, sometimes you get cables with ends not crimped properly. Crimping tool comes in handy when that happens.

Sometimes we need to do things that we really do not want to do.

With respect to the overall list of things I really do not want to do - moving a PC is at the far bottom of my list....

Moving a PC is preceded by moving a PC upstairs or downstairs.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Did some further testing. I had a spare laptop and tried connecting the current ethernet cable I use to it and the laptop was not detecting it. The issue was identical to what happens when I plug the same ethernet cable into my newly installed network card in my actual pc. I went to a different room with another desktop PC we have and tried the ethernet cable that one uses and the laptop detected it flawlessly, instantly. However with the caveat that it was still capped to 100 MBps link speed. I did some digging in the admin homepage and it turns out all 4 LAN ports, which are all currently in use, are capped at 100 MBps speeds despite all 4 cables being rated for 1 GBps speeds. Is there a chance the modem has a part to play in this issue?

The thing that seems strange to me is that despite the current ethernet cable being the newest and highest quality one I have, it has the strangest connectivity problems. I've now tested two different ethernet ports and gotten no response from them, but for some reason the onboard mobo port can detect it fine albeit with capped speeds. I neglected to include it in the original post but here's the ethernet cable I'm using:

Is it possible there's some sort of compatability issue with this cable and certain ports that would cause it to not be picked up by some but detected by others? Not sure what to make of it besides this.

So the monoprice cable is still having issues everywhere else except your comp yeah? With network card or laptop, try pushing the cable in a little harder and downward contact side and hold it, see if it gets detected. Seems to me the cable isn't crimped properly, don't know which end if that's the case so try doing that both sides individually. Contacts inside the motherboard ethernet port could be a little different, just marginally narrower or whatever, pressing down more on the network plug.

Have a closer look at both ends of the cable with a magnifying glass, the plug contacts should be penetrating most centre of each wire.

Router does play a role, if it only does 100mbps, that's all it can do. If want gigabit then new router.

Network cables don't need to be premium or expensive to be good. 5a is fine too btw, 115 MB's transfer speed. 6a is fine if that's the only choice

If you are using in wall cabling I would pull the plates and verify that all 4 pair of wires are correctly connected. Most jacks have a color code on the side so you can compare.

In general when a cable runs at 100mbps it means the blue or brown pair has a issue. It needs all 4 pair to run gigabit.

You also need to verify that there is no equipment in the path that only has 100mbps ports. Although not as common now days there are still switches and routers that only have 100mbps ports.
