A really good processor for gaming by Intel can be the 2500k or the 3570k, for AMD if you do not like the a8 then you can try the Phenom II X4 series, they are rare to find these days but they are real good with games as well (not to the extent of the 2500/3570). Generally I would say AMD offers price/performance while Intel offers raw power and some may argue it is pricier than AMD. I myself am content with a Phenom II X4 955 Black edition which maxes out almost all games I throw at it with the resolution of 1600 x 900 and the video card HD 7770.
