8800 ultra vs. 8800 gtx

is there any benefit with getting an 8800 ultra over the 8800 gtx? does the ultra run cooler? I know the Ultra is 10-15% faster, is that even worth it? I can get the Ultra for $138 more than the GTX. Thanks for the help.

Honestly i would say nethier...Since both Nvidia and ATI have both released newer better card's I would go with ethier sli 8800gt's or one 3870X2..As every day goes by those card's will get more and more outdated,hell they are already over a year old.

I agree with ^^^. The ultra and the GTX are a waste these days.

The 3870x2, 8800GT 512, and 8800GTS 512 are much better buys. If you have money to burn (apparently you do if you are even considering an ultra), SLI or Crossfire could be an option.

The ultra is an OCd GTX... so no it does not run cooler.

It's not that I have money to burn...this will be the only computer I get for several years, so I want the video card to be able to handle anything that comes out between now and then. I am thinking the GTX, I'm guessing I cant tell the difference in the graphics between the two. Thanks for the replies.

If you want to buy right now, I would go with the HD3870x2.

I agree. The HD3870X2 performs better and is cheaper. IF you must go nVidia, the 8800GTS 512 and the 8800GT 512 would be money well spent.

I have dual 8800GTX overclocked to Ultra specs and they will even oc higher but they get pretty hot. Essentially there is no difference but the Ultra's will overclock much higher than GTX's this is something 8800GT's and GTS user do not take into account when comparing performance.

a HD3870x2 cannot outperform Ultra's or GTX's in SLI, especially if you consider both nvidia models are overclockable. However price wise the much cheaper 3870x2 will save you a ton of money.

I bought my cards over a year ago so I have had great value out of them but buying one or two GTX or Ultra is not a good deal today as they are still very expensive. I would have thought they would come down by now??

If you can, I advise you to wait for the TRUE, next generation Nvidia or AMD/ATI product. Both the G92 8800's and all 3XXX series ATI lines are nothing but die shrunk and clocked up old generation chips. Nvidia is due for a next gen chip followed closely by ATI. Thats when the real performance fireworks will happen. Then I will upgrade myself.

Also i agree about the 8800GTS 512 it has the performance of GTX for less price u can say that GTX isnt worth it :

enerally speaking though, the GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB’s performance is better than the original 640MB GTS and the relatively new 8800 GT and on-par with the GeForce 8800 GTX at lower resolutions. Crank up the resolutions, however, and the GTX (or Ultra) is still the king of the hill.

Well i play at high resolution, 1600x1200+ and there GTS is loosing up to 22% on my system.
