A little help for someone lost!

Hey guys, recently I popped into a gamestop and they had a games for windows PC hooked up displaying Heroes of Might and Magic. I forgot how much I enjoyed playing strategy and RTS games on a PC so I thought I'd do a little research to find out how much it would cost to built a decent new one. I'm not trying to go top of the line, play every FPS with maxed out settings but I am interested in being able to play oblivion and most FPS with near the best settings. After doing some research I stumbled across this thread at tomshardware.com :

It looks like overclocking is the way to go! Additionally, I am interested in getting a flat panel monitor and selected one based on random reviews.

So, with all the introduction aside, I would have to say my budget is right around $1000 but can be flexible if necessary.

Forgot to note, I think I need a new HD so I'll take any recommendations on that. This PC is going to be just used for the internet and gaming so I don't need a big hard drive, just room for the OS and games! I was thinking like 80 - 100 GB?
 
With regards to the harddrive - buy for price, not space. For a long time, harddrives followed the same pricing curve. There's a "sweet spot" around $100 where the drives are the best price-per-gigabyte. Drives less than that cost more per gig, and drives higher than that cost more.

Newegg has 40Gig harddrives for $38, while an 80 gig costs $41. A 160Gig shows up at $55.

You can never have too much space. Unless you're reaaaaalllly on a budget, don't pay $41 for an 80 gig when you can get twice the space for $14 more. Figure out your price, then see what kind of drive you can get.

Oblivion is one of the most demanding games, so your statement there leaves me confused. I think an E6600/8800 GTS/2GB DDR2-800 combination can play Oblivion well enough, but I'm not sure $1000 is enough.
 
As for hard drives. Should I worry about the 10000 RPM hard drives? Are they that much better?

Shouldn't be considered if your budget is only $1000.

As for oblivion, my only experiences with oblivion are on my xbox 360. My goal is makes a PC that I can say, man this does look a lot better than my 360 😉 Does that make more sense!?

Probably won't happen for only $1000. As somebody already mentioned, Oblivion is pretty demanding, so you'll have to spend a fair amount on the video card.

Also, someone recommended this RAM to me, what do you think?

That RAM should be fine.

As for the processor... if you are going to overclock, save some $$$ and get the E4300.

Also, have you considered the cost of the operating system, keyboard, mouse, optical drive(s)? Or are those being salvaged from another machine?
