i have a asus A7V266 mobo (KT266 chipset), wich is the fastest CPU I can use with this mobo/chipset
the XP thoroughbred or also the XP Barton?

do i need a bios update do get it working?

I have an XP 1600+ in mine. At the time I believe the highest you could go was up to 2000+ at the time without a bios update. With the newer processors that are out, a bios update may be in order.

With the Thoroghbred bios update..u should have no problems running the 2200+, 2400+ and 2600+....so technically speakign the 2600+ is the fastest one you can run...dont expect to run a 2700 or 2800+ as they use the new 333Mhz FSB..well ig uess you COULD run them...but ud have to do the multiplier trick with the L1 bridges or just simply overclock ur FSB to the desired speed....even though the chipset MAY or MAY NOT handle it =)

With KT266, anything over 1600+ is overkill. I recommend you to get the 1600+.

Just curious as to why you think anything over 1600+ is overkill for this board?

Because KT266 sucks, not much faster than SDRAM platforms like KT133A. You will get only 1500 MB/s bandwidth from a 266 FSB processor and PC2100 DDR Ram.

mmm
i hoped to make full use of the thorougbred...
but an 'upgrade' from an 1400 T-Bird to an 1600+ may leave me with slower, but cooler machine

my FSB can handle 142, but even then, my USB-controller stops participating :)
so no decent overclock there...

Just out of curiosity.....how does a 1600+ perform slower than a 1.4Ghzs T-Bird???

U know the 1600+ is a 1.4Ghz chip also right??

-The 1600+ is exact same clock speed as a 1.4Ghz T-Bird
-The 1600+ will overclock better
-The 1600+ will run A LOT cooler
-The 1600+ is about 15% faster at stock speed compared to the 1.4Ghz T-Bird
-The 1600+ as a Thermal Diode and SSE Instructions, the T-Bird doesnt

You figure it out.....

OW i see :)

Anyway the essential thing for me is that it is (for the extra money) not enough performance-gain. The XP 1600+ is still a palimino core, but what i was interested in, was the fact wether it would be possible to use a thoroughbred or a barton. I'm sattisfied with my system for the moment, and now i know i must not wait untill the barton core will become cheap... as soon as the thoroughbred 2400+ (1.93Ghz) is at his cheapest i'll buy it.

ull be able to use any Thoroughbred Core based XP CPU that utilizes the 266MHz FSB Version.....otherwise ud have to pull the L1 trick to unlock and raise the multiplier.....

Also make sure u have the absolute latest bios...........

Slight correction needed. With the XP2400+ and beyond they did a slight speed correction.
The XP2400+ runs at 2Ghz, not 1.93.
Barton might appear in Q1 of next year.
