Am I the only one who has this problem?

It seems that most of my deaths are caused by something that is only shown
in the lower right corner of the display usually fainting.

I'll clear a level and then start some maintainance type things like IDing
stuff by various means. Sometimes this can take quite a while. I'll
start fainting and go exploring without knowing.

Today was one of the most annoying instances. My monk did Sokoban and
made it all the way to minetown with almost all of what I consider the
bare necessities, 2 bags of holding, magic whistle, "oReflection, unicorn
horn, skeleton key, 18 shuriken and sleep spell. All I really needed was
a towel or blindfold, speed boots and a ring of slow digestion. I also
had a few nice to have things like a stethoscope, brass lantern and a
couple of wands of digging.

After I IDed and arranged all this stuff I wend deeper into the mines from
Minetown. I promptly fainted and was killed. I was probably fainting in
Minetown and didn't notice because there was no body moving around to
indicate it and the only indicator is in the periphery.

Am I the only one who has a problem with this?

How long have you been playing? I think this is common when you start
playing, but most people eventually catch on and are more careful.

As with so many other things, just pay attention! The display for your
hunger state is perfectly visible, and once you learn it can be a
significant threat, you'll watch it more closely.

If you're having trouble seeing the words, make sure your experience
count is turned off. It can often push words off the end if you've got
too many effects (burdened, blind, fainting, etc).

Live and Learn, as they say, but in NetHack it's more like Die and Learn.

Yes, you are.

I'm sure that you get specific messages when you are hungry and then
when you are weak. Perhaps you do not have "verbose" activated as an
option, or perhaps you need to pay more attention to the messages you
receive.

And once starved, twice shy, I would have thought. Dying of
starvation happened to me *once* by accident about 14 years ago, and a
number of times since then when I have had no access to food, but it
has never yet crept up on me.

I found after a few years that I have tuned a specfic part of my eye
toregisters the "weak" indicator to warn me when it comes on. I don't
register hungry often but as soon as it flashes up weak I automatically
spot it. You ought to try forgoing all social activity for several
months and just play nethack. Then you should gain the relevant skill
:)

Your Experience points and turn counter can be turned off to
make more room.

Weeelll, it's not that fainting isn't noted in the main
message window as well... Generally, I consider 'death by
fainting while having food' as a typical death by lack
of care, similar to 'choke over food' or 'sickness'.
But if it's a consolation, it happens to me as well when
I play carelessly (and I sometimes do; not every game is
strictly focused on ascending).

Best,

Since your problem is not the way the game represents things, but the
fact that you don't pay attention well enough: no. You're probably not
the only one that has this problem. There are many more people around
that let themselves get distracted and don't pay attention to vital
stats.

I found that after my oh-so-successful tourist died to Pestilence on
Astral, I've become very, very proficient at spotting it on the status
line :) Same for my Valkyrie who nearly bought it on water... "<it>
swings itself around you!" now warrants a full-scale panic attack.

Yes, that's another one which now grabs my attention subconsciously
