I have a 2nd computer at home , it is a gateway dx6201 with a 9550 amd phenom cpu, mobo unkown,8gb ddr2. I recently got a AMD 965 cpu for a debt owed to me, i want to drop it into the gateway machine, but it is a socket 2 mobo or 2+ not sure. I dont want to buy anyting else, will it work? I read a socket three will fit a socket 2 but a socket 2 will not work in a socket three. I dont care if the cpu underperforms in that board, just want to know if it works and if u need some kind of mobo flash. I am not the most techy guy, so any help would be appreciated.

You'll need to flash your BIOS to a newer version to support new AM3 processors, but Gateway, just like other manufacturers rarely release these BIOS updates because they would rather consumers purchase a new computer than upgrade the one they have.

So your saying it can be done, and how would you find the correct mobo bio flash, would it be through gateway or the mobo manufacture, which in that system i have no idea what mobo it is.
