Just remember, the P2 does better against this than the P1 did against C2d.
The P2 is cheaper to make, with more successful yirlds, whether theyre higher or not, doesnt mean the triples and duals are selling.
So, all in all, they are actually in better shape than a year ago, even with the I5

They've staved off death until 32nm Westmere... Intel by then could just push down prices ever lower for AMD.

What we're seeing with i5 and Phenom II is similar to what we saw between Core 2 Duo and Athlon X2 6000+.

My predication, one year from now, quads will be $100 and close to mainstream.

Theres no point in going too cheap for Intel, it lowers their margins as well, and also threatens to do greater harm to AMD, which should not be their focus at this point. They dont want a monopoly, and theres other things out there creeping up on them on the edges of their entire product line and future product lines, which isnt AMD.
So, having better margins with more money it would seem to me to be the better scenario

They Don't want AMD to be a significant force in the industry, but they NEED AMD. As long as AMD is around Intel can point to them, and say "see, we're not a monopoly, you can buy the same thing from AMD if you want to" If you think the fines Intel's getting are bad now, you have no idea how much worse they would be without AMD.

They want to crush AMD so AMD can only compete in the low-end segment.

Until i3 debuts, that is :).

I think Intel really wants AMD to just bleed slowly to death by acquisition or bankruptcy, so as to avoid any inconvenient anti-trust investigations. So they will adjust their prices to make sure AMD cannot make a profit, esp. at the low end.

Considering that P2s are about the same die size as Nehalems, they aren't that cheap to make! :)

Yes, the graphics division of AMD is doing well, but they only account for a limited portion of AMD's overall earnings. And even so, those earnings have not even paid the interest on the ATI acquisition debt.

Unless AMD manages to get back to profitability overall, or secure new debt funding, or sell off some piece that they haven't already, it may be that they go Chapt. 11 and re-emerge as ATI graphics. They could pull a GM and put all the unprofitable stuff into the original AMD, including all the debt (I suppose a judge would let them do that), put that part up for sale and be left with just the ATI part.

But who knows? Maybe they will get more investment from Abu Dhabi.

Good thing is, ATI's new cards are ahead of the field, and go uncontested, and also will have slightly higer costs for consumers this go round, and more than likely, a higher held prici9ng point for a longer duration as well, which means momentum in marketshare growth wont stumble, and profits will climb substantually.
This will help the bottom line, but AMD needs to have their cpus put money on the table

Yes, AMD is teh evil! 😀 As soon as they get the perf lead in a category, they jack the price up and shaft the consumer!! EVIL! EVIL! EVIL!! 😀.

PS - where's good ol' Thunderpants?? Haven't seen him posting here in the last 6 months..

I have to agree with you ozzman,

I think that AMD will find a way to stay alive, and they will release something that will put them back to the top of the heap. I really don't see anyone company staying on top forever, It is just the nature of things.

 ya true, but some how Thunder always finds the sliver(that might be an understatement) Diamond lining with AMD.... No matter what.
