Right. Opteron and Xeon are two products that a pretty much equal on the whole. At least this time, AMD is only claiming they have the best performing Server CPU, and not workstation. For instance, with the 2800+ and 3200+ CPUs they claimed the world's overall best performing CPU.
But anyways, does the Opteron really outperform the Itanium 2?
1 Mb cache for the Xeon will surely help, but Intel will need to stretch the pipelines to be able to gain more performance via FSB and cache. (Correct me if I'm way off here) 😛
I think I even saw a 1.3 Ghz Itanium 2 for around $1000-1200. I could be wrong though. This CPU should really challenge Opteron.
Yes, the 1.5 Ghz, 6mb L3 cache Madison core Itanium CPU costs $4000, but that's the same price as the "old" top-dog 1 Ghz Itanium with 3 mb L3 cache that just now is gonna fall from it's throne, replaced by the 1.5.
It's an extreme price but at least it's obviously getting better.
