He's lumping phones, tablets, phablets, appliances and webservers into that category. Your home routers are also probably linux.

Remember Linux is not an OS, it's merely a kernel. There is a whole range of POSIX compliant OS's that happen to use the Linux kernel along with GNU/FOSS software. That is why it's extremely hard to directly compare global numbers like that, people need to break them down into specific market segments.

For desktops and laptops Windows reigns supreme by a horribly large margin. For smartphones, tablets and phablets it's a mix of Android and IOS. For appliance devices it's a vender customized OS that use's the Linux kernel and for webservers it's RHEL. The most common desktop Linux based OS is Ubuntu with the most common Unix based desktop OS being Mac OS (or whatever Apple wants to call it these days).

Linux is just a kernel, but it usually gets thrown around as shorthand for the entire Xorg/DE/etc stack that you're going to run on top of it along with all the basic busybox/GNU tools. If you just ran a kernel for an OS you'd be pretty disappointed.

Regardless it looks like AMD is starting to get a little loose lipped with what they are working on. We have 20nm Cat Cores and 20nm ARM cores with GCN.

Windows will remain the dominant desktop PC OS for a while. No amount of "lol there's more smart phones with Linux Kernel and Android so Windows is done!" is going to change that (as sad as that makes me).

I never understood how people got excited about that. You get bombarded in the states with Sprint/ATT/Verizon/TMobile family plans where they want you to buy phones for your entire family. In fact, the purpose of smart phones is to keep in touch with friends and family. So it's sort of like, duh, people are going to have more of them because they can be had for zero cost with contract for a service you more than likely need.

Anyways Linux has its place and its no where near a desktop or laptop. If Amd can port Mantle to linux or perhaps we can see a huge performance benefit in gaming or programs this will change but as stated i seen nothing but a 5% difference in performance when comparing the top linux distros with Windows. If you are just running a small media server or web browser machine Linux is great(Mint i like the best). But even then i run into stability issues with several builds of mine where 7 is WAY more stable and even vista. Not a fanboy statement its a fact kinda like a PS4 being stronger then a Xbox one in hardware its pure numbers no debate is necessary

uhm we're in the context of "PC GAMING" (hence mentioning STEAMOS, steam, etc) here, what are you on about? as far as reality is concerned, there's a handful of triple A titles coming out on linux and that's why making the switch is a bit difficult, to those who actually play videogames.

Every reasonable person can check that I didn't even mentioned SteamOS on those posts. Every reasonable person can check that I didn't even mentioned SteamOS on those posts. Every reasonable person has to be perplexed by the attempt to attribute to me the silly phrase "steamOS will win because linux is being used in supercomputers", which I never said of course and then use that invented phrase to call for a ridiculous ban.

This is why I have to laugh seeing all those pathetic attempts to attack me and ban me. The problem is not the language. I know because other people in this thread understand my posts perfectly. As someone reading this thread said once:

The problem is that some people in this thread dislikes what I say and are obligated to use ad hominems and other kind of silly attacks because lack any serious argument or data.

I also laugh seeing the guy who always uses the attacks of third posters to bring his repetitive mention of the A10 vs i5 stuff as perennial ad hominem (I recommend him to add that to his signature). He loves to ignore that what I said about the A10 and how my benchmarks predictions were verified up to single digit percent or error...

Please stop saying "ad hominems" Your use is incorrect at times and people that speak and write English as their first language rarely use the term.

Personally I like some of the things you say about AMD's upcoming products, but you have little to go with much of what you say, and you write as you are coming from a higher authority and have special information. Many know this is not true, you have access to the same information as everyone else and the vast majority of what you say regarding new products is just theory and it needs to be presented in that way. That is if you want people to just read what you write and move on with out coming back at you.

Juan tbh the most serious issue is that you always claim to be right. When you look at what exactly have been said and not what you were implying then yes you end up being right but that is only because you fail to mention small detail that lets you get away with being right... Which is pissing people of, not because you're right, but because you weren't right in what people thought you were discussing... (What you seemed to be saying A10 == I5, in reality A10 << I5, when you meant A10 == I5 in your benchmarks )

Windows is a minority if we take every machine in the world, but how is that relevant for gaming? By gaming what do you mean? Is playing flabby bird considered gaming? Please be more exact because apparently your definitions are different from everyone else.

Windows is NOT a minority when it comes to what most people consider gaming.

My published article about A10 has lots of paragraphs with detailed technical info and predictions about a concrete set of benchmarks. Honest people would like to take the entire article as a whole, but people looking for a fight like to ignore the parts of my article that hurt them, including the benchmarks made on final silicon showing that my predictions were accurate up to the single percent digit.

When I mentioned "gaming" I was using the standard meaning of the term. PC gaming is only a subset of Gaming

Personally I like some of the things you say about AMD's upcoming products, but you have little to go with much of what you say, and you write as you are coming from a higher authority and have special information. Many know this is not true, you have access to the same information as everyone else and the vast majority of what you say regarding new products is just theory and it needs to be presented in that way. That is if you want people to just read what you write and move on with out coming back at you.

Unlike others, I differentiate between what AMD says officially, what AMD says behind closed doors, and my own predictions/guesses about future products.

My signature is an example of the first case, my talk about Zen before it was officially announced by Rory Read was an example of the second, and my guesses about AMD's K12 (IPC, frequencies, architecture, SMID wide...) are an example of the third kind.

Juan i brought up steam OS(originally) and it was in a next gen discussion and it seems like you think PC gaming will go down? Perhaps but Intel and facts say otherwise at the moment anything else is pure guessing. So again for the 100th time game sales on the PC beat consoles. Steam isn't getting smaller. The better iGPU's get the more i guess(not a fact) that PC gaming will go up.
