AMD FX-60 or AMD Athlon X2 4800+??

:?: Just about to order the heart of my new dream rig from Newegg and have a real dilema....the excellent 4800+ for $800 or the new FX-60 for $1400? Love the FX line for gaming, but is the new CPU so much better performance wise that it's worth the extra $600 or not?

I'll be using the rig for gaming primarily and will be using the new ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo, 2 MG of Corsair XMS 3500LL PRO RAM, 2 X 74GB Raptors in a RAID O array, a Koolance XEOS -2 water cooling set up and running 2 BFG 7800GTX 512 MB water cooled cards in an SLI configuration.

Which way would you go and why (so I can learn!)??

The FX is only for bragging rights. It is da bombe, but the dif in price is not made up in perf.
But hey, you would probably just waste the money on women anyhow, so buy what you want.

Go down to the benchmarks and see how both processors perform against each other in different tests.
 
Id Go With The X2 Becuase It Cheaper Than The FX60 And You Dont Actually See Any More Than 60FPS So Youll Be Ok (Not To Mention You Will Have A Fatter Wallet) If You Go With The X2 Look At My Specs Below, Hell I Get 130FPS In Half-Life 2 w/4xAA And 8xAF On MAXIMUM Detail Settings @ 1600x1024 (My 17.4" Silicon Graphics Wide-Screen LCD's Native Resolution)

Note: Even Though You Wont See 60FPS+ Gaming Will Be Smoother Overall
 
i hear a lot about opterons but never really looked at em that much, always thought of them as server proc's.. but there x2 cores that are "better than average" so they get bumped to opteron.. with unlocked multi's.. correct me if thats wrong 😛 so, go for an opty or x2 4800... fx60 is overpriced
 
yea u shouldnt be too worried about bottlenecking ur proc, even with 2 7800gtx's a 4400 will give just as good performance for 200ish cheaper... theres no need for a top of the line proc if all ur gonna be doing is gaming
 
well this kid prob has the same view as u since hes running sli when its probably one of the biggest ways to waste money on a comp... but i guess he has a huge budget... so if 5 fps means that much to him then the extra 200 bux is well spent 😛... id rather spend it on games/girlfriend :wink:
 
I own an AMD Athlon X2 4800+ and currently have it overclocked to 2.62GHz on air easily. Don't waste the extra 600$, on the FX-60. You'll want that in July when the new Nvidia cards come out.
 
lol damn july the new cards come out?... this cycle gets quicker and quicker.. why dont they just come out with badass cards yearly instead of everyotehr week topping eachother by 10 points in 3dmark
 
im sorta new to the building comp myself game, since i just got a well payign job.. before i had a compaq amd2400 9600pro and 512 memory, it wasnt the worst comp ever, it lasted 3 years... it was pretty tired :)

Well Nvidia has not anounced a new card in July, but look back and you'll see July of every year is usually when Nvidia releases a new series of cards.
 
lol well i look forward to the 8 series :) i heard it has 32 pipelines? or somthing more than that... whereas the ati has many less but is much more efficent which is why i always think AMD and ATI and nvidia and intel because AMD and ATI are more efficent but nvidia and intel are just pure power

If you go to Monarchcomputers.com they have the FX60 for $1,159.69. Hope this would help.
 
So if I get the X2 4800+ and "OC" it to 2.6Ghz, it'll be the same chip as the FX-60? For $600 less? Could it be that simple or am I missing something?
 
I know several people who have 4800+ and Fx60's.. it seems they have about the same performance, but the FX60 comes into its own for OCing. By that I mean on chilled water or even vapo.

So for general stuff and not excessive OCing, go for the 4800 I say. Or wait for the M2 socket and see what thats got. Or, the Opty route is a very good one, saves some cash and can OC nicely on stock cooling 😀

i think the fx60 has more multipliers, but if overclocked they are almost identical... probably less than a 2% difference, so yea, go for the 4800 and save the cash, spend it on sli if u want more performance

You're right.....it's so close that it really doesn't make sense to pay the extra bucks.....besides, there's always something new coming out next month that makes anything we buy today "behind the curve" before it's even delivered, right?

Groan......we just can't buy stuff fast enough to keep up with "the next big thing", can we?

haha yea since the fx62 is already announced on socket M2... which is due out in what 5 months?... too bad the performance increase is gonna be tiny too 🙁.. i wanna see the next "powerhouse" cpu run at at least 50% faster than the fastest current gen cpu, kinda like video cards are doing right now... 2 6800gt < 1 7800gt and thats 1 gen... try looking at 9800 to 7800gt... no contest... like 300% faster
 
But from what I've seen it still only overclocks to about 2.8GHz on air, just like the X2 4800+. The only difference is the multiplier overclock. So with decent ram 2.8GHz would be easy on either chip.

The pair of 512 MB GTXs might have given this away already!

Save the $600, and get the 4800+, you can live with 1 less frame/sec if already averaging 125 fps in FEAR....! 🙂

There's no gauruntee the X2 4800+ you receive will have 200 MHz headroom left in it, but, even at standard clocks, it's plenty fast as is. (I'd go for the dual core socket 939 Opty 180,,,same 2.4 Ghz speed, but, better tested, probably have more OC luck/probability with it....and some are actually cheaper than X2 4800's which makes no sense whatsoever...
 
even if you dont overclock the 4800 its still blazing fast, the difference in fps will be less than 10 in any given game compared to a fx 60
