talking about thuban ;)
here is an old bench of mine with old 4+2 phase gigabyte 880gm board. Due to some reason i am not able to get more stable clocks on my thuban even with 8+2 phase asus 890 board with big heatsink on vrm and i don't want to run it at more than stock volts for 24/7 so now i am running at just 3.6GHz@1.325v only with 4ghz turbo@1.4v


i used these custom heatsinks and a fan on them to cool vrm, and 225x18 cpu and 2.925ghz ht/nb to achieve above score
 


What error do you get above those 3.6GHz?

with my current pc i can do 4GHz stable (but temps go high thus don't use it) but if i want to do more than i will need to push more in volts and when i run stability test and temps get high (above 60'C) it throw mostly cpu instability related codes (i checked using http://www.overclock.net/a/common-bsod-error-code-list-for-overclocking ). It looks like 212evo and my current cheap cabinet with only one 90mm exhaust fan is not enough to keep it cool and thus bsod

i think with better cooling (below 60'c during load) i can do better because i have successfully validated upto 4.5GHz at 1.55v http://valid.canardpc.com/bfl33t and 4GHz on stock 1.4v http://valid.canardpc.com/9n6j84 but if i want to keep temps below 60'C and want to remain under stock volts then 3.6ghz with 4GHz turbo is my current stop

though its base clock keeps jumping by +-2.5% and can result 4GHz turbo to go as high as 4.1GHz so i have enabled LLC (no option to select level) and it now jumps to 1.425v during turbo ( any idea to keep it stable at 200 or limit its jump to +-1mhz, latest bios don't help and latest bios does not let me complete post if i use disable any core )
and i can only enable C&Q at 3.6ghz or below base speed so looks like 3.6ghz base with 4ghz turbo is currently best


BTW i am thinking to do some open bench overclock testing using peltier module between heatsink and cpu ;) ( and then using that petier to make a small AC :whistle: )
any thoughts on this, maybe 5ghz validation on air :D
 


If you only want validate, disable cores (just leave 2 alive)...set voltage to 1.55V and rise up frequency...xD

I tested it with OCCT for hours and it is rock stable. I have recently underclocked my cpu to see how low of a voltage I can get at 4 ghz, so far I'm at 1.272v.

ok guys I'm stabilising slowly but not fully finished my build,
so far running amd 8350 chip (stock fan hence idle runs... DANGEROUS I KNOW)
on an asus m5a 99x board
8gig vengeance ram (1600mhz)


running at idle only im hitting 4660 but its not the temps killing me! as soon as I push it to 4700 I get about a minute then bsod... any ideas as to whats causing it?

oh btw think my timings are out compared to what theyre supposed to be, the box states 9-9-9-24 I think
 


What error code you get in the BSoD?

Regarding your timings for the RAM, those should be X.M.P that only works on Intel. What model is the RAM?

it turned out to be ht/nb clock not stabilised neither were my timings! school boy error in more than one way, never rechecked timings after altering fsb also never paid enough attention before even starting the overclocking process... after more research and swapping to multi only I got things more stable. I'm now able to run some (not prime or intel burn) stress testing and run games keeping it below 65c. I daren't push any more until ive upgraded cooling and definitely psu! clocked bk to stock fornow but itching to see what it'll achieved once voltages are cranked (voltages at 4500mhz are stock) I only bumped them up to push to 5ghz at idle then quickly shut down afterwards.... living dangerously I know lol


you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge as to what x.m.p stands for but I was aware it was only intel that was able to use this feature/method.

btw my error codes were 0x01, 0x0124, 0x0... I forget but I can hazard a guess they were voltage/ram related, I really appreciate the help too thanks, ive spent most of my waking time the last few days/nights scouring the internet for answers and info regarding overclocking and limits ect

sup fellas,im here to share with you on how i got my 4.8 stable overclock with the msi 970 gaming mobo with oc genie. true story. dealing with msi boards i always had bluescreens of death and prime 95 core failures when oclockin manually. no matter what i'd done it always happened. i've searched youtube and other websites and to no avail my other msi boards would crash. a couple of times i had to replace my mobo cause it couldnt handle the extreme oclock. so one day with my amd 4130 and msi970 g43 mobo i was like ,you kno what ima let oc genie oclock my board (it clocked it to 4.3)and run prime 95 while im at work.( 4 hours) i come home from work and prime 95 still running and i have no errors or core failures. so in my head im like ,man that has to be stable. let it run for about 2 more hours and guess what,(what,lol) no core failures or errors. omg i found real true stability! i have the 4130 clocked at 4.5 ghz on my old computer and it runs flawlessly. no bluescreens no freezing no nothing! so,on my new computer i have the amd 8370 and this msi 970 gaming mobo and i put it through a 4 hour test at 4.8ghz and i never seen a blue screen or a crash until i tried 5ghz or 4.9 ghz.......here is how i did it. go to your bios and click the oc genie button. when you click it it leaves you the option to change your multiplier,nb voltage ,core voltage and other things. everything else you cant access. it turns of or on the thing you need for a stable overclock. i changed my multiplier to about 23.5 and core voltage to 1.40,and bam stable 4.8ghz oclock. 4.8 is my everyday oclock and i stay on my computer all day playing games or browsing till i have to go to bed and not one single crash or freeze nor bluecreen. oc genie is very stable! ive been using msi boards for 3 to 4 years and went through at least 3 boards due to oclockin failures. msi FTW baby. hope this helps for guys with msi boards.
 
I used to run my 1090t @ 4.0 24x7 on 1.475v core. Keeping the temperature down was king though and that is why I had no problems out of it.

On a newer board with better LLC and H110 cooling I got it to 4.2 on the same voltage. So LLC and lower temps are a big help to the Phenom II.

 
Well...I am a little disappointed...but it is by choice.

After getting an error encoding a video at 5.0GHz on the FX 9590 system, I did a little more investigating.

Under full load, it was hitting around 52c and on occasion 3-4 of the cores on 3 different modules would start to throw an occasional Cache Hierarchy error once heated up and at full load. This never caused a fault with stress testing. So this is either new, or was not caught during my testing. But it can be seen as a correctable error in the windows system logs.


This error went away whenever 1-2 of the following were true:

Speed below 4.98GHz
Voltage above 1.48v Core
Temperature below 52c
Total CPU load below 90%


At this point I've decided to drop down to the 4.9-4.95GHz range for my 24x7 OC. Being that this is on all 8 cores the total multithreaded power of this CPU is still well above stock. I would need to pull 4.8 / 5.4 with turbo core to even come close.

As I see it, this is my self-imposed wall. I don't like the voltage/heat/noise jump for that extra 50MHz.

Yeah, 5.0-5.1GHz is doable. But it is very clear that the sweet spot for performance and efficiency on my particular chip is 4.90GHz. It does 4.90 all day long without a single error on just 1.40v core and 1.25v CPUNB. Very pleased with that.

Maybe I'll try lapping another one next time they are on sale and I have the extra $$$ to blow. :)
