Hello,

I'm building a new low cost gaming pc, i'm trying to decide between these two cpu's.

AMD CPU FX Series 4100 Black Edition Quad Core Processor Bulldozer
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/10-cashback-amd-fx-4100-black-edition-orochi-core-s-am3plus-36ghz-8mb-total-cache-ht-3200mhz-95w-ret

AMD Phenom II X4 960T Black Edition, S AM3
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-phenom-ii-x4-960t-black-edition-s-am3-30ghz-8mb-cache-95w-retail

The rest of the build is as follows...

Motherboard ASUS M5A97 PRO AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 PCI-Express ATX

Graphics VTX ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express

RAM 8GB Corsair XMS3 (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz 1.5v Dual Channel

Hard Drive 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX 3.5" SATA III Hard Drive

PSU 600W Corsair Builder Series 600CX V2 80PLUS Power Supply

CPU FAN Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO Rev.2

I'm reusing an NZXT Case and a SONY disc drive.

The main use of the PC will be gaming, i'm trying to keep it cheap as possible.

any help is appreciated

:)

the 960t is generally better but if you OC both chips their performance should be similar. the 960t can be sometimes unlocked to a 6 core cpu but its not always possible and you might not have stable clock speeds when you do.

the 960t is 5% faster than the FX4100 at stock and about even once you OC both cpus to the max. The FX however has scheduling problems in windows 7 so optimal performance isn't always there, you can take an up to 30% hit on performance in some multithreaded applications, generally its close to 5%.

the i3 is faster in gaming until you OC the phenom. then it will be pretty close. you won't really be able to OC the i3. If you care about power draw or done want to OC, get the i3, if not then the phenom will be better since it has 4 real cores and will perform a lot better on things that can use more than 2 cores.

They are all the same sorta price range, which one will be the most upgradable in the future? Also any idea on graphics cards i should go for? I was thinking 6850/6870 or possible jumping up a bit and going for 560ti

However i3 has way more upgrade room! 😉

Sweet thanks alot. Any ideas on the GPU's i mentioned in my previous post? sorry for all the questions i'm pretty novice

I'd go with the 6870 as its cheap and powerful. you'd want the i3 for upgradability but you'd need to buy a z68 board if you want to upgrade to ivybridged which can be a lot more expensive than a cheap h61/7 board. you can always upgrade to a current i5 or i7 on any mobo that supports the i3.

Thanks for the advice. For me here in the UK theres about 10 pounds between the two cards, so probably worth going for the 560ti. Also whats your opinion on the motherboard i posted, should i go for a more expensive one or is that one okay?

sorry for all the questions, i really appreciate the help.

The v-lx sucks imo, if you are getting an asus board, a p8z68-v is the minimal. Do they sell the asrock z68 extreme 3 there?

960T Rocks IMO. Unlocked to 6 cores (1600T) oc'd to 4.4 Ghz (Stable) @ 1.55Vcore & LLC set to "High".
4.5 Ghz needs more Vcore but currently @ heat wall.
Run AIDA64 and see where it stacks up to other CPU's. I take down most of the CPU's on that list.

Looking forward to breaking 5Ghz but that will likely require a chilled loop.

$125 for Phenom 2 960T is a bargan

Crosshair formulaV mobo, Mushkin Redline 2133 RAM, Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD, Raidmax RX-850AE PSU, Xigmatek 120mm heat sync with Delta 150CFM 120mm cpu fan.
