There is something wrong with the testing in this review. Every other review i have looked at, have much better performance in Crysis than what is seen here. Maybe not enough voltage to the CPU or bad compatibility with the motherboard?

Considering that AMD's die sizes are larger than Intel's, it makes me think that Intel's profit margins on their six core processor must be NUTS. You could buy FIVE of these AMD hexacore processors (or three of the higher end one with 100 bucks left over) for the price of a single Intel hexacore. Their performance is not equal on a per core basis, but thats still insane.

Nice to see AMD finally implemented a turbo mode. Next up: simultaneous multithreading!

Bottom line, AMD is selling more cores for the same money, but each core is slower than Intel's. If your app is highly multithreaded (or your running a few multithreaded apps at once), go AMD. If your just building a gaming rig or general purpose PC, go Intel.

[citation][nom]bk420[/nom]Where can I sign up to buy this thing NOW. It looks good considering the price. 6 cores is better than 4 IMHO.[/citation]
its on amazon now for $325 total that includes the shipping/free shipping.

[citation][nom]megamanx00[/nom]Interesting results. Seems it acts a little screwy with some applications. I need to see more results from other sites before deciding how useful I see the 6-core Phenom II. Still, this confirms that it's not worth ditching my Phenom II 955 for. This is especially true since Bulldozer will be out next year, on 28nm no less.[/citation]

Bulldozer-based implementations built on 32 nm are scheduled to arrive in 2011 for both servers and desktops, as the 16-core Opteron processor codenamed Interlagos and as the 4- or 8-core desktop processor codenamed Zambezi.[5]
, its 32nm not 28.
And its in the earliest scenarios 2011 but probably Q3 or Q4.
I love AMD and I own a Phenom II X4 but don't tell things that you don't know about.

TigerDirect has them with a $50 rebate for both with Bing's cashback option as well.

To use the Bing cashback option, search for "motherboards" + "tigerdirect" on Bing, click the first link, click on a motherboard, and search for the x6. Make sure to read all of the cashback rules before buying it, though. Never used it before, but plan to do so in the future.

maybe I've set my expectation too high for AMD but I was expecting gaming performance on par with i7 920/930 with a price tag under 200
sadly, it is not

I'd love to see price drops but then again, I don't see the point for it =S

I'm sorta impressed. My i7 920 that I picked up from Microcenter for $199 last year is still way overkill for most of the things I do. I game, I do CS4 work (soon to be doing CS5), video conversion, and watch porn. To me, the i7 920/930 is still the best bang for your buck. Overclock those suckers and you're set for the next 3-5 years until more apps start supporting multi-threading. The Phenom II X6 is a great upgrade for AMD users.

I would wait to see what else AMD has coming before I buy the X6. Usually the first models tend to be the slowest and buggiest. They'll probably release a 3.6Ghz version shortly for the same price as the 1090T, which will drop to the $200 mark.

If I didn't already have 2 i7 rigs, I would totally build me up a X6 rig just for kicks.

You know I haven't seen anyone in these comments open their eye's and realize we're talking about a 6core 6thread processor, keeping up with or beating, 4core 8 thread processors, and even at times beating a 6core 12 thread processor, in multithreaded apps. I'm half tempted to upgrade to one of these from my 9850be within the next couple months. Would still be running on an old msi k9a2 plat though.

Now in the single threaded apps, I'm thinking MS's scheduling is still to blame, as you can see with the threads bouncing between cores. You know I never saw that happen with say prime 95, because it always ran at 100% load, but I've watched it happen with any app that doesn't sustain a constant 100% load. Question, is there a way to tweak the way thread scheduling works in Vista/Win7 to where it won't do that? Or would setting processor affinity in single thread apps help to alleviate part of that problem?

[citation][nom]joneemcdowell[/nom]AMD X6 1090T or CORE I7 930???? HELP!! I'm confused now. I can buy the 930 for $199 from mirco-center and OC it to 4.2Ghz. So is that a better way to go instead of getting the AMD 1090t?-Jonee[/citation]
There is a 500~600MHz clock discrepancy between i7 and PII. Meaning an i7 is as fast as PII that's clocked 500~600MHz higher. Consider both CPUs tops out at 4.0GHz, i7 is the way to go as PII needs to be 4.5/4.6GHz to match it.

A few things worth mentioning- This is a very attractive upgrade if you own a AM2+/AM3 board. No need to buy a new MB to get the best desktop CPU AMD has to offer. To me, that's a big selling point. Take notice Intel! (You all know that the new Sandy Bridge CPU is going to use a different socket)

As most of us are aware, most games don't take full advantage of 4 or more cores. I'm sure in the (not so distant) future that's going to change. Games are not everything; I use my Q6600 to do number crunching for the World Community Grid. One process per core. Being able to crunch 6 problems at once is great news, aseptically when the entry-level chip is just over 200 bucks; less than what I paid for my Q6600.

My 2 cents.

It should be able to OC higher than 3.7, Ive seen one article with a stable 4.11 on air and another with 4.01 on stock cooling. At any rate, good job AMD, and nice article.

well considering this is more or less a cut down version of an opteron why would the results be surprising, the opteron was after all designed for applications and not gaming, roll on bulldozer...

Stock performance seems to within 10% (higher or lower) of the 930,and since they cost about the same the OC results are where it really has to be decided.

My 930 is running at 4ghz, with stock vcore, and many people hit 4.2 or higher with some extreme cooling; if the X6 can keep up with that then it is really worth it.

I don't see why you do an article citing overclocking with the Intel chips but not the hexacore. AMD is selling the black edition on newegg today!

I consider this review incomplete without overclocking being addressed. This sucks.

And next year Ati will produce their gpu's in house.

1055T can do 4.2Ghz without effort, 1090T the same but with less v-core. In madboxpc a 1090T + Asus Crosshair 4 gives you 4.5Ghz of overclock (without proper tweaking for 100% stability).

Fact:
Thubans overclocks way better than Denebs
At the same number of cores, consumes a lot less
Equal consumption 6cores vs 4cores, that's impressive.
