I was not all that impressed with the graphics in Avatar. Still way too cartoony. Probably less to do with the hardware, and more to do with the shift in the industry away from hiring artists who need to brush up on their computer skills, towards computer people who are being 'taught' art... Artistry requires talent, where using a computer requires skill... Can't teach talent...

Case in point: Jurassic Park STILL has some of the most convincing CGI I have ever seen. Much of this has to do with clever camera work and alternating between CGI and animatronics, but still, why do film makers have such a difficult time reproducing the greatness of the work done in good ole' 1993?

In fact, the only other CGI intensive movie I have seen with CGI that I have been able to suspend my disbelief since Jurassic Park has been the 1st Transformers movie, and that was only because the director was smart enough not to hold on a CGI scene for long enough to notice the unnatural CGI.

If only we ran games @ 30 fps, no AA and.. 720p (lol, actually most are less..), it could use the full power of our PCs!

Total BS. The 3D models used in Avatar likely had 100 times the triangles of modern games. Plus they used a completely different rendering technology. Better graphics....maybe. Avatar level....no chance in hell.

Personally its great... thanks to MSFT there is competition against sony for high end game console... without them we would still be rocking PS2 graphics...

but we are getting to a point where game developers arent going to push these consoles to the limit cus of the sheer time and expense to do so

Ugh guys. I think the future is.... a console which brings you into a virtual reality world. E.g. the movie Gamer. Now that would be awesome. No more handling of controllers or mouse or keyboards, You a gamer? You better start working out and jogging everyday to be able to keep running on unlimited sprint in games. Accuracy problem? Time to train your arm muscles.

guns jamming? learn to clean your gun dang it. The future will blur the line between reality and virtual reality.

not gonna happen. just remember how much horsepower need to render avatar and they claim one single gpu able to pull that with playable frame rates in real time? unless they want to release the console in 10 years or even 20 years from now i honestly believe they can't do it. prove me wrong by showing the real hardware in action

Well, technology is advancing at a exponential rate at which that rate is also growing exponentially so everyone who thinks it will require 10+ years for a console to reach Avatar quality should really only expect 3 or 4 calendar years. That aside, I doubt they'll ever put the most recent hardware in a console since it'll raise the costs and the console will seem less appealing to consumers. Nontheless, I just wanted to point out it isn't too far fetched to have a console that can render Avatar quality :)

I'm sure this comment was not intended for the more knowledgeable audience of TH. I bet though that every 12 year old will be repeating it as doctrine to their friends as they write up their list of demands for Christmas '12.

False. The hardware is used as much as developers want to, and crappy ports are both on PC and consoles.

Not the answer is True. Consoles are consistent platforms and developers are able to economically tweak their code to perform better. A modern PC with the exact same hardware as an XBox360, would be far crappier.

It is true that developers often create crappy games, but it's also true that the games designed for consoles tend to be better optimized than all but a few PC games.

At the same level of hardware a console is almost always going to be a better platform for gaming. The Achilles heel for consoles is the enforced low cost and the long term standardization, which allows PC gamers to spend much more money and buy more modern hardware and usually beat consoles.

So... the XBOX720 is going to make a 100000x leap in performance and compete with a 40.000 quadcore / 104TB RAM render-farm?
I wonder how many people know the real quality in avatar, lighting techniques and the actual time required to render something like that.
This is simply not possible, even with something like 10 590GTX, you wouldn't come close to 1% of the power needed to achieve this claim.
I'm a 3D maya modeler by the way.

Consoles are always behind desktops in cpu and graphics power, and no game on any system look anything like Avatar. Maybe in 5-10 years something will look that good.

[citation][nom]rabidface[/nom]While this doesn't seem out of reach at all, considering the video chipsets out right now, and what is can still come, there is just something about this article......I can't put my finger on it........[/citation]
Well, they said Avatar level of detail and I think the reference was assumed to be about the movie. It may be more like Avatar the game, based on the movie. :)

Really, where is VR? Nintendo tried it years ago before the technology was ready, but now it would be far cheaper and easier to design. All you need is a console worn as a backpack, surround sound headphones, and even the glasses wouldn't need to be 1080p because at 3 inches away you wouldn't notice much difference if it were 720. A lower resolution would allow for cheaper system components, bringing the total cost of the system down to a more affordable range, yet still offering a completely compelling experience.

To be done right it would require some significant investment in getting everything to work just right and have enough games to make the thing worth it's price, but hell, if I could buy a fully VR system for $600 that'd be amazing!

[citation][nom]lamorpa[/nom]Why? The isn't a question that it can't be done. Even if cost wasn't a factor, even if size and heat weren't factors, it would be impossible.[/citation]
It has everything to do with those 3 factors! If cost, size and heat were not factors, then this wouldn't even be an issue because it would have been done years ago. Would you buy a $28,000 console the size of a PC case that ran at 89 degrees Celcius? Of course not.

Ah, bold claims once again...I remember this back when PS2 was coming out...It would have graphics akin to the level of what you see in current movie cinemas and if you made something half ass on it it would still look good, etc etc, blah blah. It was only with this generation (XBOX360, PS3) that games came within reach of CG quality stuff. But again graphics are at a high level and will get to a point where it will plateau. Only thing left will be to up the resolution that's it. If a game had Avatar level graphics, I wouldn't be wowed.

I remember The E3 back in 2005 where demos were shown of what the PS3 was supposed to be able to do. They boasted that it would have 2 terraflops of graphical power and showed the skin detail and lighting effects on Dr. Octopus' face. I haven't seen a game on the PS3 or Xbox 360 that could actually do that. There are still games being released with terrible jaggies and choppiness. I have Crysis 2 running through a GeForce 460 with the latest DX11 graphics enhancement files and every setting on full...THAT is a true jaw dropper. These console companies are selling people false hope as they always do. I'm STILL waiting on "Boxing" for PS one that was on the side of the box. (joking of course, but does anyone else remember that?)
