I was not all that impressed with the graphics in Avatar. Still way too cartoony. Probably less to do with the hardware, and more to do with the shift in the industry away from hiring artists who need to brush up on their computer skills, towards computer people who are being 'taught' art... Artistry requires talent, where using a computer requires skill... Can't teach talent...
Case in point: Jurassic Park STILL has some of the most convincing CGI I have ever seen. Much of this has to do with clever camera work and alternating between CGI and animatronics, but still, why do film makers have such a difficult time reproducing the greatness of the work done in good ole' 1993?
In fact, the only other CGI intensive movie I have seen with CGI that I have been able to suspend my disbelief since Jurassic Park has been the 1st Transformers movie, and that was only because the director was smart enough not to hold on a CGI scene for long enough to notice the unnatural CGI.
