I agree with you rich. At first I wanted to cut mike a break because he knew what he was talking about. But I have gotten sick of his childish rants and name calling. Loyalty to the company is no excuse for such behavior.
BTW: Got any strawberries?
No but I got some PRUNES...

Die troll and don't come back.
I don't intend to take sides, but here's to question your fanatism, Mike:
How will you react if Conroe really does demolish the AM2 platform?
I have strong HOPES that it will, because AMD would have to reply with something as fast or faster and vice-versa until the end of time to stay in the competition. To escape the intel-troll label, the rig I plan on building this summer is likely to hav a 939 X2 4200+. That's if the benchies show that AM2 doesn't boost performance unless combined with ridiculously expensive dd2-800.
yes, I see that, but /if/ it beats AM2, regardless of preliminary benchmarks?
It's not like AM2 is very defendable at the moment either as the sample benchmarks of the AM2 4800+ showed no performance increase. Yes, they couldn't use ddr2-800 at the moment, but how much extra power can you get from memory that's 0.2 times faster (assuming the latencies are proportional)? I'm also aware that there was some memory bug of sorts reported with the samples. It's also important to mention that Intel has a few more months than AMD to optimize the Conroe and up the performance.
Mike, thanks for keeping me entertained.
My thoughts on this whole conroe thing. The benchmarks looked too good. It seems like too big a leap in performance. We will see, when some samples start getting around to actually be tested freely.
But what did I conclude from it? Well, it kind of looks like the AMD was running on an older platform, old bios. Probably not optimized well. That speaks more to me about AM2. Because if you buy one in Q3, get a decent one, well, when AMD does roll out its next generation CPUs, you are gonna have a motherboard that works. Maybe even in the generation that follows.
I have an old socket A system, that I have upgraded the CPU I dont know how many times. I like that.
I have a prescott space heater, for those cold winter nights. I have a P4 northwood, with some screaming fast Rambus memory.
History has shown us, you have to wait until its out the door, to see what it really is going to be. Intel has good PR. But I hope they aren't blowing Conroe up to be much better than it is, because people are really tired of them lying.
I have Intel's, I have AMD's. Not a fanboy of either. I do lean towards AMD for the sole fact, they tend to keep their sockets longer. Intel needs to learn that lesson, to keep compatible socket types longer. Makes people happier.
If Intel wants to make some big points with me, then put out a replacement CPU for my prescott, that is a barn burner, and not something that sets the barn on fire.
Keep up the good fight Mike. You are keeping it entertaining for us all.
Good luck Intel, I want your Conroe to be what it is claimed, because then we are going to see big performance jumps on both sides of the fence more often. I just like the idea, of not having to change motherboards every 6 months, if I want to upgrade CPUs.
Mike, thanks for keeping me entertained.
