Had same problem trying to update Java. Couldn't uninstall older update. Fixed by downloading Microsoft Fix It from majorgeeks.com. Took a few minutes to fix but I had already spent hours on it.

Yeah, I should have mentioned I was running 10.7.3. I apologize. Thanks for you help though.
