I just bought the LG 194WT. This is my first LCD but I have been wotking and setting them up for years. I am a Computer Tech by trade and bought my first computer in 1986. No, I'm not 100 years old, only 50.
Let me tell you how to check out LCD's in general. When you go to Fry's, Best Buy, CompUSA, CircuitCity ect. first off make sure the display is in it's "native resolution". I only found one out of ten widescreens that were. If they are not, and I would bet all the ones that are on a long line of shelves which only have monitor after monitor are not because they are all going through a "video spliter" to share one 1280 by 1024 signal. Ask someone to move the monitor you want to check out over to a system that will provide the proper signal. For me it was 1440 by 900 19" for a 20.1" it will be 1680 by 1050.
Next do an "auto adjust". This will not be the best the monitor will do but it will give you a great idea how it will handle Color and Text. Speaking of Text...do not for get to open "Note Pad" and check out how sharp the Text looks at "10 point" thats the standard for Emails. Also remember to turn on and off "Clear Type Fonts" to see how this affects the Icons on the Desktop.
Now, about this monitor. I went to my local BestBuy and put the LG 194WT next to the Gateway FPD1975W and the Samsung 940BW. I by passed the 19" MAG and Westinghouse because of personal prefrences.
Next I did an "Auto Adjust" on all three monitors. I checked the resolution and they were all at 1280 by 1024 so I knew I was not going to see the best picture on any of these monitors until I picked the one i like the best and had it moved to system that could provide 1440 by 900. In the mean time, I watch their slideshow and checked out the Color, Contrast and Sharpness of all three monitors.
Then I played with the menus of each monitor and made my choice the LG.
I took it home and really gave it a work out with Emails, Letter Writing, Web Surfing, DVD Movie "Inside Man" (which has a lot of dark scenes) and Unreal Tournament 2004 (which I had to hack some settings to get to work in 1440 by 900...bty it can also do 1680 by 1050).
The first thing I did was turn the contrast down to 50 and the brightness to 30. So much for having a "2000:1 Contrast rating" You will never use it.
The GOOD: Movies look great , text is very sharp, Unreal Tournamet is very cool.
The BAD: Web Sites only fill 1/2 the screen which will take some getting used to but the worst part ins the "On Screen Menu Buttons" They will drive you CRAZY. First, their located on the back of this monitor which is just WRONG. Even though there are little icons printed on the front of the screen, it is just to hard to work it. It is in my opinion a "deal breaker" and I will be returning the monitor for just this reason. The Gateway is better but the Samsung is the best of the bunch. Buttons on the front and very easy to navigate.
If you switch between Emails, Web Surfing, Game Playing and watching DVD's, you want to be able to adjust the Brightness and Contrast quickly and easly. The LG just dosent to it and thats why even though this is a new monitor, LG is droping the prices. I understand the nest models will have the buttons on the front and a diffrent interface.
Final Thoughts: Even if I got a handel on the Menu Interface I would not keep this Monitor and I'll tell you why...If your going to upgrade to a Widescreen LCD you should get a 20.1"! The 19"'s are just a tiny bit taller screen size than a 17" and for some strange reason are much smaller then the 20.1"'s. Also make sure the monitor supports HDCP if you want to watch HD-DVD in its full glory. The Gatway both 19" and 20.1" do. The Samsung 940BW 19" and 205BW 20.1" do and the LG L194WT and
L204WT.
OK so you all want to know what I will be buying? The Samsung 205BW for $299 at www.NewEgg.com! The Viewsonic VX2025WM is also very impressive but...if your going to spent that kind of money you should get HDCP and the Viewsonic does not come with it.
