In Windows XP, Is there a non-harmful way to create a desktop shortcut that closes down all noncritical computer apps?

I tire of closing down my web browser, audio player, word processor, ETC. before I start up a game. I don’t mean simple games such as Zuma, I mean games that require software like I described to be closed down so a games performance won’t be affected.

Thanks in advance

Solution
WARNING - this solution disables virus checker software

start - run - msconfig
services tab
tick "hide all microsoft services"
disable all (in my case I reactivate steam for MW2)
ok - restart

finish your game and then:
start - run - msconfig
services tab
tick "hide all microsoft services"
enable all
ok - restart

Thanks! I didn't think about the msconfig option. I appreciate your suggestion.

Is that the only option? That'd get tiresome to do everytime I start up the game.

I've tried to create bootup modes using some of the guidance in the tweaking companion in the past but failed miserably (http://www.tweakguides.com/)

not sure what your system is, but iwth Win7 and raid 0 disks bootup is only a matter of second rather than minutes. At least this way I always know when my computer is in safe (firewalled and virus checked) or performance (minimum processes) modes.

I use this to run MW2 (I think my game install has some kind of memory glitch, after a while the sound starts to break up if I have anything running in the background)
