So I summarize: there are more windows pc's than macs, therefore are higher target for viruses, there are more software and developers for pc's, therefor higher chance of getting software conflicts. windows is more open os for software, thus allowing an insane more amount of programs and more chances for conflicts. macs' ONLY saving grace when it comes to less system crashes is because its os is closed and have such a minute and scrutenized number of programs. the day that mac os goes open and more public for developers is the day mac os will see just as many crashes and headaches for itself. if there was a day macs got up to the same number of users as windows pcs, i wonder which system will THEN be more problematic with viruses, crashes, headaches, etc. THAT day would be the true test. right now these commercials prove nothing to me.

I think the lie of virus immunity will soon fire back to apple. Using OS/SW vulnerabilities to infect a system (for which it seems mac OS X is weaker) is only a small share of the infections. The big share in done by using "Users vulnerabilities" (You trick a user to make him do the wrong action) and if the User think that his system is 100% safe he is already doomed.
Crashwise I never saw a Windows XP/VIsta or Mac OS X completely crash (need/auto rebbot) without a HW/Drivers problem behind, but personally a tink apple applications crash more frequently. But I have to admin that Apple GSOTD (G=gray) is way sexier than Windows BSOTD.

My MAC has crashed 3 times this morning. It's a two year old MacBook Pro which was "top of the line" when it came out. Of course it's a software crash, not a hardware crash so I guess the "MAC" didn't crash if you want to go that way to spin it.

But each of these crashes claim there's a bad font in the software. The only way to fix it is to reboot when suddenly that "bad font" goes away and everything is fine again.

I paid $4000 for this laptop. I feel totally ripped off because instead of doing anything I wanted to do with it, I'm using it for basic functions, IM and web browsing.

And not one freaking genius can help me fix the fact that in Tiger, it worked fine with the Vista network. Could see the network and interact. As soon as Leopard was installed, goodbye network! All my vista (and now windows 7) machines can see it, but lol, it can't see them. The genius response "Uhh, I don't know what to tell you."

[citation][nom]croc[/nom]Hmmm... Obviously (judging by your many irritating posts) a Mac fanboi. Why don't you get a REAL workstation? Say, a PPC 6 running AIX, or a Sun Niagara running Solaris? Too expensive for the Mac fanboi? Or, you don't know how to use it...? Bah. My old Sparc 11i will eat any new MAC (or PC for that matter) for breakfast when it comes to crunching a database, tarring gzipping, etc.[/citation]

So, so hostile. Calling people names, people that you know nothing about.

Just for the record I have a very nice Windows desktop...two in fact. I also have a couple of Mac's. As far as a RISC processor...no thanks. Hell, what you going to run on it? Might as well go for an IBM System/360. Cost is not a factor for me...both are not very practical for my needs. I purchase a computer to do what I need to be done, and I do not let dogma or marketing influence my decisions.

So lighten up there muchacho.

[citation][nom]Yoder54[/nom]Apple has run a consistent ad campaign, whereas MS is all over the board and seems to be grasping out of desperation...first there was Seinfeld, (insert ad),...and now we get the MS goes shopping consumer attack ads. Attack ads from any source are belittling to all, and we can thank our politicians for that.[/citation]

The Seinfeld ads were not the desperation, that people are moving to apple, but the desperation, that people chose to stick with Windows XP, wehreas to move to Vista.

Regardless the source of the desperation, it is desperation.

MS would serve themselves well if they tried to sell us on their products instead of using attack ads...same with Apple. As I have said before, I like the server solution ads that MS puts out. Unfortunately, Karl Rove perfected the attack ad campaign and research has shown that consumers are more responsive to them. I would like to see either Apple and/or MS break the cycle and dare to be different...there is no reason why the computer industry must follow the way of the politician.

Many here have brought up the fact that Macs have a price premium over PCs. Well duh, right? I got bored here at work a week or two ago and decided to build some test rigs. Rig A: out-of-the-box iMac from apple.com (this was the $2200 one, I can't think of any specs off the top of my head). Rig B: a collection of hardware components - shopped at Newegg.com - equaling or subjectively *better* than what you could find in a iMac.

In other words in one hand you've got a $2200 iMac and in the other a case, p/s, RAM, vid card, monitor, OS X Leopard, etc that equal part-for-part (including software) what the iMac brings to the table.

In this demo, some parts didn't exactly cross over for a "custom" iMac build. One example was the excuse of a graphics card on the Apple.com iMac. In these situations, the closest but slightly better part from Neweggs catelog was chosen.

Of course you can't say they are exact comparisons, because the iMac is one unit, whereas the custom build is a tower with a connecting monitor. But the result: $2200 non-customizable Apple.com iMac versus a $980 custom rig with OS X Leopard.

So essentially, $1200 for the appeal and "convenience" of an all-in-one unit and the Apple logo. Functionality (software) and hardware are piece-for-piece.

I know of hardware devices that will mimic a Macs "BIOS", but I've also read posts on how to install OS X on a custom-built PC. I haven't tried, but I know it is possible.

It just makes me chuckle to realize that smell-their-own-fart Mac users are willing to pay in many cases DOUBLE for the status symbol of an Apple computer - ie realistically the only thing different is the OS.

[citation][nom]the_one111[/nom]Indeed, people forget that virus creators want the biggest bang. And honestly, who would want to go after Macboys anyway? Would be far too easy to hack most likely.[/citation]
They are considering someone wrote a hack for Mac and Safari. They cracked it in less than 10 seconds. Way more security holes than IE. Lol
