Are Open Ports Dangerous?

Hello, I am thinking about opening a port for a certain multi-player game. I was just hoping to know if opening a port for this game could leave me vulnerable to hacking or other stuff like that.

Not likely with a game. Usually if the game is not running the port on the machine is not active. So the traffic may flow thought the router but the pc will ignore it.

More the risk is some of the more common ones like microsoft file sharing and people who have web servers but don't do a good job of restricting the web access.

So, if I'm only allowing access through this game, it shouldn't be a problem?
