Posted this late at night so now that I have time, let me 'splain my reasoning on this build. Opted for a bigger SSD so that it'll run more than a bloated OS and one game without adding any heat even tho that meant giving up some graphics punch - and less heat again! Speaking of heat, that 'cheap' but well designed case breathes enough that I didn't feel the need to add water, just another fan with the cooler. Throughout this build I opted for quality, even willing to pay for the bracket rather than risk waiting for one tiny piece to complete the build. Think I've created a rig that will boot-up and keep going. What $1500 rig doesn't need some upgrades, but it won't need upgrading as soon as its finished.... :pt1cable:

This was my first entry for one of Tom's contests. Had A Blast! Can't wait to see what the next two rounds will let us do!

That Intel Core i7-960 is incompatible with an X79 board, since the i7-960 is a Socket 1366 CPU while X79 boards are Socket 2011. Also, you are probably going to want a quad-channel RAM kit, because otherwise you are severely limiting your memory bandwidth on X79 boards. Plus, Socket 2011 CPU's don't come with a stock heatsink, so you'll need to find a compatible one (I recommend Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - $34.99 + LGA2011 Retention Bracket for Hyper 212 Series - $1.99 from NewEgg).

Intrus's White Lightning

INTRODUCTION
This system was built with beauty in mind, every corner depicts the perfection Corsair and ASUS are known for. If I had more play in the budget I would've included a water block for the gpu and ram. I've never built anything watercooled before, so forgive me of any faults. I'll leave the details of the hoses and fittings to you guys 😉 Make a few upgrades (i'm looking at YOU gpu and hd) and this would be a sick oc system.

Can easily overclock to 4.7 ghz, plus Notctua will provide free brackets for the lga 2011 board. 16gb of quad channel ram means you do intensive video editing or other ram heavy activities. Good PSU at 700w, with current build only 500W needed, but ample enough for addons more video cards, storage, or other components. Asus 6850 provides ample enough game performance at directx 11, another can be added for SLI later. The SSD will boost your performance greatly, boot windows in no time at all. Plus most of these have mail in rebates which is outside the current total, enabling you to buy more stuff.

Romulus's Flexible Build

Processor: Intel Core i7-3930K - $599.99
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X79 - $339.99
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8Gb Low Profile DDR3 1600 - $49.99
Graphics Card: ASUS EAH6850 - $159.99
Hard Drive: OCZ Vertex 3 60Gb - $108.99
Case: Cooler Master Storm Scout - $69.99
Power Supply: Seasonic M12II 620W - $89.99
Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus - $25.99 and Retention bracket - $1.99
DVD Burner: Lite-On 12X Blu-ray Burner - $79.99

Total: $1526.90 - $45 for CPU/Motherboard Combo = $1481.90

Throw in some Velcro reusable straps - $7.69 in case you don't have any and want to improve the cable routing and internal airflow and the price will come up to $1489.59. There are mail-in rebates for the video card and the SSD which would bring the price down another $30 but those rebates don't count.

I call it flexible because it's got the flexibility to add another video card for even better gaming performance with a big enough case and modular power supply that will be able to support it, and it also has a high quality SSD that would pair nicely with another hard drive as a cache (using the ASUS SSD caching) or simply as a boot drive. And a Blu-Ray burner? Well, the discs are down to about $1 per disc so it's nice for those guys who like an alternative to cloud storage/backups. It's a good build on it's own but with a couple of additions can be an excellent build.

This system should be called Sacrifice. I had to sacrifice on a few choices to include a hard drive large enough for everyday use, A video card fast enough to do some gaming, I also included an OS, even though it doesn't ask us to in the price. Also, unlike others, everthing linked is in stock, not old prices and out of stock.

9. Power Supply - OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W - $67.49, w/ 10% promo code (was $74.99)

Total: $1496.41

Notes: Though the rules didn't specify promo codes, I consider promo codes to be a type of instant rebate and they're DEFINITELY not mail-in rebates, so I assumed that they are allowed. Also, although I love ASUS, limiting a build to $1500 when the CPU + Mobo combo accounts for well over $900 results in what is, IMHO, a rather unbalanced build since processor is SO much more powerful than the GPU, and it doesn't leave much room at all for any kind of 3rd party cooling, PSU overhead, or a larger, faster SSD.

9.Cooling: Thermaltake CLP0554 $60
10.DVD Burner: ASUS 24X DVD Burner $20

Total = $1480

This case has excellent cooling and the cpu fan does a great job. Using 4 x 4GB ram since the processor/motherboard has quad channel memory. Many of the builds here are using 2 ram modules which is a mistake. The single drive and video are a little weaker than i'd like but the $1500 limit won't let me do better. Adding another $500 for an SSD, bigger drives and/or a better video setup would make this a nice system.

Had to change SSD due to price change... and who marks posts "useless" in a build contest?!?!
