Ati 5550 vs gta 4

I havd ati radeon hd 5550 1gb ddr3,intel core2duo 2.66ghz,2gb ram.i get very unstable fps 10-50 which makes game unplayable even at the lowest settings of resolution and graphics.what settings i need to change or i need some special drivers for 5550? OR do i need to update ram or processor?

That graphics card is way too weak for GTA4. Also the game runs better with a quad core CPU although if you could overclock that Core2Duo to 3.6-4.0ghz that would help. You would do better with 4gb of RAM as well......sorry for all the bad news. GTA4 was poorly done as a PC game although the latest patches have helped you still need a very powerful computer to run it well.

I have to agree with anort3, GTA4 is quite demanding. I have intel i7 2,66 MHz cpu, eah5870 2GB DDR5 gpu and 12 GB of ram and for the game to run, as smooth as I'd like, view distance and detail distance is set to 31, with car density at 70. My res is only 1440x900.

A guy I know who works with hardware stuff, said that you would in theory need a 4 GB graphics card, before you would be able to max out details. Don't ask me how he came to that conclusion though.

you have an incredibly weak GPU, and are trying to play a very demanding game.

that card isn't even meant for gaming. just video playback and other basic tasks. if you want to game, you need to upgrade your system.

But games like crysis warhead,modern warfare2 run very fine on my system on 1440*900 and med settings.

But GTA is a shoddy console port, not well optimized to run on low end hardware.

Crysis is a PC title, and so designed to scale back to low end systems. MW2 is just a game built on very old tech, and very undemanding in general.

GTA requires a powerful system to play, which you do not have.

From the way their talking you'd think you had a Radeon 5450 instead .

Anyway, the 5550 should be about the minimum requirements, about as fast as an X1900. Still, playing with the minimum ain't too fun. Too bad you didn't spend a little more to get a 5670, or at least as 5570.

Anyway, some more RAM and overclocking your CPU would help. You may also want to look into overclocking your video card. Disable any background programs, like your anti-virus, when loading up GTA 4. The fewer things running in the background and on start up, the better. Vista uses more memory than XP so if you're on Vista you should have a lean install otherwise only 2GB of RAM could be a problem.

I would just like to ad that my backup/dev system has an E2200 with 2GB, Vista, a Radeon 3850, and I wouldn't even think of trying to run GTA 4 on it

Going against the nay sayers on this thread - the HD 5550 should be capable of running GTA 4 at 1280x1024 at a fairly decent fps. Turn AA off though - this has the most effect on the frame rate. If you are still experiencing problems I suspect the main bottle neck is the lack of memory (2 gig for a Vista machine is the effective real minimum and you lose 1 gig of this with the memory addressing for the video card). Drop in 4 gigs of memory if you can (though you may get a slight increase if you have a fast USB stick you can "speed boost" with).
I've got the same card in my rig and I'm able to play L4D2 and Modern Warfare 2 at full detail at 1650x1080 so the card is capable enough.
