[citation][nom]eric7[/nom]ati still has the fastest card and it is going to be much faster. and i currently have one of these. i d'ont know why people are talking about nvidia like they have the fastest card but they d'ont. and i am talking about the mighty hemlock. asus has comme up with the ares, a 4 gigs monster thas is 32% faster than an hemlock and ati radeon is coming up in q3 2010 with the hemlock hd 5970 eyefinity wich is going to be the same power as the ares but more readily available still with 4 gigs and much more furious cloxk speeds than the current hemlocks. so stop saying nvidia has the fastest cards cause they ain't.[/citation]
Now say that again in english.

[citation][nom]bison88[/nom]It's a damn shame, the Fermi architecture had potential if it wasn't plagued with delay after delay. It should have been out 6 months ago, at the latest. ATI had a solid 6 months to let their DX11 cards soak into the market, and they held the longest "Fastest GPU" status for a good while. Usually nVidia stripped that within a month or two every time ATI released their new card by throwing out an "Ultra" version.Hopefully nVidia pulls a rabbit and makes up for this quickly as AMD/ATI is already in the works set for a 6xxx series by the end of the year or early early next.[/citation]

they still hold their title the fastest video card in the market, the ares kills the 480GTX by massive margins

This trend toward ATI seemed almost inevitable after the royal screwing that NV gave to most of the laptop vendors, in the form of their faulty 8600 series mobile chips. I know four different people who experienced dead laptops from those defective chips, and not all of them got free replacements. Piss off the OEM's and of course they're going to look to your competitors for future product. In this instance, ATI benefitted from this.

[citation][nom]tethoma[/nom]And another reason why I am loseing alot of money in the NVDA stock.[/citation]
LOL, should have bought AAPL stock instead. Mine has more than doubled in the past year! Yay!

ATi taking over the current gen is most likely due to most AIOs, laptops and already-assembled desktops are not able to properly handle the heat of the top Fermi cards.

That said, GO ATI! Red flag! Wooo!

[citation][nom]ta152h[/nom]The Fermi is a complete failure. The low end GPU is the same size as the 5870, but performs much worse, and costs a lot less. That's a failed designed.[/citation]

Remember that the GTX460 die includes 1 disabled SM out of 8. The GPU is capable of 14% more rendering power. Also it actually has fewer transistors than Cypress.

If yields improve, Nvidia could release a GF104 with all 8 SM's enabled and higher clock speeds. This would be very competitive with the 5870. The GTX460 is only at 160W, so they could easily do this at under 200W I think.

The problem with GF100 is that it has a lot of non-gaming related features that use up transistors and increase power draw and heat output. In the future, I think it would be a good idea for Nvidia to separate their gaming and professional GPUs.

HD2XXXX was an abysmal failure like fermi but ATI still lives. I have been an ATI user since I bought my first graphcis card (X1950gt) and have always thought that ATIs motive has been value. I guess that it has started to work out for them.

I dont use Nvidia, but i dont wish the company to fail. How would we get such good prices without competition?

Like I have said here before: NVidia prices their products way too high. You do not get good value with Nvidia cards. They often use yester tech and label it as new (8800GT, 9800GT, GTS250 being very similiar). Nvidia has not stayed competitive in pricing and what you get for your money is not very good. Fermi may be fast and great-but the heat issue still bothers me. CPU heat is down-why not GPU heat?
Love to see the competition continue with both brands. Monopolies don't bode well for consumers.

ATi is gr8, but I would opt for them over Nvidia, had they something equal to CUDA (something with as many applications)... unfortunately, they don't....

ATi Steam just doesn't compare.

I really don't like installing microsoft .NET framework for ATI drivers. For the rest I had a better TV output at higher res for far less money. Seems like not only ATI is a better bang for the buck but also AMD with 6core cpu's.

I was wondering when this would happen.

ATI simply surprised everyone. They aren't the fastest, but they do know how to make a compelling product. However, ATI's advantage this time isn't just the Fermi delay, but also how much less power they need for the same performance. The main reason why I have the Radeon 4870 over the Geforce GTX260 is that I wasn't sure that the GTX260 would overload my PSU or not, but was sure that the 4870 had a lower chance to (4870 requires about 30 watts less).

If it weren't for Tomshardware's "Best bang for the buck" series, there would be no way for me to track whether any of nVidia's 200 series would be a good deal or not. The recent rebranding crap is just getting confusing, and ATI simply is easier to track. The rebranding crap is also turning off some PC gamers.

[citation][nom]Pei-chen[/nom]Some people seem to think gaming cards made up the majority of Nvidia's revenue.[/citation] So true they make the most profit off of their workstation cards and only the ATI brainwashed believe that.

I think we could be reaching a point that unless new materials are discovered we won't see GPU's getting that much better. ATI hit the sweet spot with the 5870 but the fermi although faster in many ways it is pushing the limits of heat and power usage to get it. I could be wrong as that has happened before but I have been reading a bit about the longevity of over cooked chips using the current materials and it would seem that maybe even ATI would have the same problems as Nvidia to go much further.

It's obvious how many fan boys of ATI are on this forum because any comment with anything positive at all about Nvidia gets 300 thumbs down instantly...

[citation][nom]mccarlson[/nom]Nvidia simply got bad press on it's Fermi engineering samples. I have a Zotac GTX 480AMP! edition card and if that was the card used as the engineering sample I'm pretty sure Nvidia would have beat out ATI last quarter. Besides, the GTX 460 wasn't out yet either and two of those in SLI are 33% faster than the ATI 5870 at a lower price point! Nvidia will win in Q3.[/citation]

Takes GTX460 in SLI to beat HD5870's single GPU.....but 2 HD5870's in Crossfire would be even faster.
