Completely random. Sometimes it happens to me on my 5770 3 times in a day, sometimes I'll go for more than a week without the driver crashing. Very frustrating.

[citation][nom]fermware__[/nom]LOL at the people singing the praises of Fermi in the comments. Please tell me one time that Fermi has been publicly displayed and NOT crashed. It's my understanding that at this point in time, it can't do ANYTHING without crashing.[/citation]

So wait, a product that is still in the works is not 100% stable? Go figure, way to compare apples to oranges.

ATI released their cards to beat Nvidia to the punch and it seems like they might be paying for it. I'm sure they have a great card on their hands but there are issues to be resolved, I hate waiting on those issues when the product is already in my hand.

I have owned several cards from both sides. I loved my 9800pro and my 4850 is solid but... I can honestly say any issues I have run into were on the ATI side of things.

I have been wanting a 5850/70 very bad to pair with my i7 rig but with the raised prices and now this problem I might as well wait to make 100% sure I get the best product for my dimes.

[citation][nom]HundredIslandsBoy[/nom]How about world class carmaker Toyota with their huge recall? Are Toyotas still going to be good cars? You have to look at the big picture and realize that many new hardware products will have some quirks when they are just released. Take motherboards for example with new BIOSs released sometimes every other months. Are you going to stop buying those too?[/citation]

His brand new $400 game playing video card won't play games, that is a major problem. Maybe my last bios update resolved an issue with wake on lan, that is a whole different level and far from a big deal.

Microsoft gets no pass for a borked 360 (ended up paying 1B) and I see no reason why ATI should.

This problem goes beyond 57xx and 58xx GPUs. I have a Sapphire HD 5970 and have experienced the same problems (grey screen and colored lines) 4 times during the one week after installing the card on my Win7 64-bit machine. Each time, the machine was either idle or encoding some videos. Driver issues ? Maybe. Could also be heat issues.

To those who say GOOD ON AMD/ATI for coming out and saying there is a problem
You are WRONG
The only reason AMD/ATI have had to address this is thanks to the likes of TOM's Hardware for picking up on the forum posts and questions ask by people who up until this media release was posted on TOM's site had NOT received any admission from AMD/ATI that there was a issue and were getting the run around with the do this try that replays from the suppliers.

Old saying
People will tell you what you want to hear and not what the truth is.

Could be something on the boards that is faulty and when you think about it the anytime crashes that we are seeing could be related to what we are doing at the time. i.e just checking the web or low demand graphics games verse high demand graphics games.
We can already see that the 10.1 update/fix has not fixed the issues and in fact has created some more problems.

We can also see that AMD are not saying anything about the NEW 5970 cards that are having the same issues, and if it is/was a software problem way are some people NOT having these same problems?

Some of us have done re-installs of OS and started from scratch and tested the cards after each driver install or update and we still are seeing the same issues.

Take a look at some of the reviews where the NEW cards have had no contact between the VRM’s and the heat sink, this along would course your system to fail once they overheat.
http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id- [...] oblem.html
We will all have to wait and see if AMD can fix the problem with software.

We tested 2 x 5970 cards that had these problems.
In my own option, after all the testing we have done on the 2 x 5970 cards we had is that the cards we tested and had verified by the supplier are faulty. Each card was test by itself and in crossfire set up
The cards where also tested in another new system with the same results. So two different systems same result.
.
We believe on the cards we tested that heat and/or sensors are the issues.
Also we see that people are having cards replaced and in some cases the problems have gone away without altering anything in there systems while others are still having the problems with the replacements.

Below I asked a question about heat and got a Reply from AMD/ATI

Response and Service Request History:

Me asking
I am interested to know what your thoughts are on the heat issue that we are seeing from these cards and believe that this issue may be a big part of the problem along with power fluctuations on throttle back.

AMD/ATI Reply
If there is a heating problem then there may be communication breakdown where there is no proper hardware throughput. Although the fans should compensate for heat rising around 100 degrees Celsius, this is considered very hot for the card. If both cards individually are both getting hot, then it may the problem may not be card related. As testing two cards may indicate greater probability that this may not be caused by graphics adapter.

The average temperature in a 3D game may average anywhere 50-70 degrees. Though at times we have seen higher temperatures, but it should never stay constantly that high.

...and when I thought it was dead, the big bad bug is back..."the driver"
that's why I prefer and recommend nVidia

I lost My 2nd monitor for 2 days before I read a hard boot would fix it for a while. See if that helps till they get a patch out. I think it's voltage related but don't have anything to back it up.

My 4850 has been "grey screening" since I bought it about 6 months ago.I think its a Powercolor. I have a 4830 in my wife's PC that is perfect. I crossfired them to see what would happen, and it started "pink, purple, grey, and fuschia-screening"... very, VERY annoying.

Got the fix, was very happy for about an hour , but its started again , 4 times so far 2day and iv only been on for an 3 hours = not so happy

In all honesty from my own testing it would surprise me if most of these problems are not defective cards. I have two 5870s in crossfire and both at this point have shown no issues. I have now tested these cards in 3 different machines have had 0 issues. q9550 775 , p55 I7 860 and now an X58 I7 920 setup. All 3 setups are running on gigabyte Motherboards. Both cards are Saphire 5870s purchased in Dec 09 and Jan 10. Windows 7 64bit , all Windows updates , using 9.12 (hotfix) and now 10.1 (hotfix). If it was software issue I would be inclined to believe I would suffered the issue on at least one of these setups. A defective part on the cards affected would seem more logical to me. Certain ram is a possibility, as I am not an engineer would be hard to speculate but the chances of me buying two cards that both work on 3 complete different setups sure seem suspicious if its software related. Very frustrating situation for you guys with problem cards and hopefully ATI can come up with a software solution but I really have my doubts.

Hi I have the same problems too. But I tested some other cards as well and the problem stays. In 3D I almost have no problems but in 2D display drivers keep crashing. I tested in the same system a Saffire ATI 5750, a Asus Geforce 9600GT Silent and a GT230. All of them give the same problems??? Display driver crashed and recovered. System is a Shuttle XPC SX48 P2 Deluxe with 8GB OCZ Platinum ed. RAM processor Intel E8500. I did clean install of Windows 7 32bit Ult. and 64bit Ult and Vista 64bit. Removed partitions before doing clean install and still facing the same problems. At the moment I'm running the Saffire ATI 5750 did some tweaks I found on the forums. Set Memspeed to 900MHZ, Voltage to 1,1V ans Clock to 650MHz continue. Disabled windows Aero installed the 10.1 Hotfix drivers and for the moment it is running without any crashes ( 2 days now ). Sometimes I see some display faults ( window colors are not okay or are striped, text not readable etc in the window headers ) but only in dual monitor setup. When I'm using just one I have not seen any display faults. Everybody is thinking that the ATI cards are bad but I'm facing the same problems with two NVIDIA and 1 ATI Card??? Hopefully somebody comes up with a real solution. By the way I did not have this problem when I was running Vista 32bit no service packs and the GeForce 9600GT and only 4GB of RAM, all trouble started when I went from 4GB to 8GB and Windows 7 64bit. Even when I removed 4GB of RAM and only keep the first 4GB in ( 2 modules ) in problems did stay. I still have the harddrive with the 32bit Vista installed on it, when I put that drive in I have no problems but I cannot use the 8GB of RAM. I enabled PAE but Photoshop is still 32bit and I still cannot use all memory. So for now I'm stuck to Windows 7 64 bit. Maybe it has something to do with Windows 7 or Vista with the service packs installed?? For now I keep running it with the tweaks waiting for a solution.

I just got mine 2 days ago and can anyone confirm if the fix has been released yet? I am unclear as to whether this has already occured? Mine was doing it with the most recent driver via ATI website. I don't even need to be doing anything for the little dots to start happening - just sitting on desktop.

i'm just another witness of this crash shit of gray vertical stripes.

Owning XFX 5870 XT. Running Win7pro 64bit.

Getting a lot of vertical strips in STALKER/Pripyat, that makes the game unplayable, getting them around every 5-10 mins of playing.

I played Bioshock 2 fine for about 1 hour instead. It just froze when I pressed ESC to go to the main menù, too bad.

MW2 also run smoothly.

I tried every driver/combination, from 9.2 to 10.1 to 10.1 hot fix and 10.2 beta rc2. Gray vertical strips on STALKER COP or black screen or even black vertical stripes.

I hope to see another "hot" maybe hotter fix soon, it's not good spending 359 € on a video card that doesn't work.

hmm... mine does these things:

Flicker, then black screen. It just crashes like poof. Whether it be playing games (Last Remnant or Trine) or just watching a video on youtube.

I've got XFire ATI Radeon 5770 with AMD Athlon II X2, a generic motherboard from E-Machine and a 750W PSU. So yeah, what gives?

New I should of gone with a GTX260 over the 5770 xD. Might try to see if the company I got my card off will exchange it for a 275 with a bit more $$ ofc.

well i have the 5870 XFX and i had the another brand... the first week was good. Never had a problem. then it started going to blank screens ( or the screen starts doing differnet colors from blue to grey to white to black and all over again and never gos back into windows and you can heir beeps and other weird sounds some times when the screen changes.) then coming back some times. no all the time. When it did go back to normal they was a window that poped up saying somthing like : Your Vid driver/ or device stopped working and windows has fix the problem... So i was like ok Def card and returned it and got another 5870 ( the XFX ) and first day was good. didnt get the problem NOw im getting it almost any time im running a game in windows mode. or watching somthing on the web(even the news ) todays been bad. This is my 2nd time writing this. Is this the problem others been having? if so let me know.

Well TRILIM, I have a 5770 series but the problem I'm experiencing is not exactly the same as you but with similar consequences. I've had to borrow a friend's card cuz it's starting to get me really angry on ATI. In fact, it's now absolutely clear in my mind that I always buy Nvidia from now on. The problem I had with is tough to describe but I'll try... pixels becomes green in random position in the screen... then I can move the mouse cursor for about 20 seconds but that's it. I mean, I cannot click anywhere or do anything, I can just see my cursor move. Then, the screen completely freezes (cursor included) for about another 20 seconds. It's then that it becomes tricky, sometimes, I can never recover from that stage, the screen is frozen and I can only restart my CPU using the restart button. If not, the screen becomes becomes all black, or whatever the color, and it recovers, with the same little windows warning about the driver problem and that windows recovered... It can happen at anytime, like you, even when idle... This is sick, I payed 230$ for my card, and the problem is, it works on another machine, it's probably a compatibility problem, so the store won't take it back... I'm really pissed!!

Purchased an XFX HD 5770. Seemed ok for about 1 week then same exact problem as everyone else. Also getting any annoying super size cursor at times. Submitted a problem ticket with XFX but after reading all this I dont have much hope. Will XFX replace with a Nvidia card around same price range? So long ATI.

I own Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic 1GB Video Card as of Friday(3/27/2010). Since then I have been experiencing flickering on my screen constantly. I have already requested an RMA from NewEgg. It seems to get worse when I am scrolling or when I open a game. I am currently running ATI's Driver 10.3. Today I noticed that when I opened CCC's ATI Overdrive that the 'Enable ATI Overdrive' checkbox was CHECKED. That caught my attention because I had not manually checked this checkbox. In the Group Box titled 'Current Values' it states GPU Clock: 240MHz and Memory Clock: 300MHz. Mind you that the flickering is constant. The moment I uncheck the checkbox the flickering instantly STOPS and the Group Box titled 'Current Values' changes to GPU Clock: 400MHz and Memory Clock: 1125MHz. So it appears that the idle settings for the card being that of voltage and other stuff might be TOO LOW. Should I continue with the RMA or could this be a Driver fix??? But wasn't this supposed to have already been fixed on Driver 10.1/10.2?

This has been happening for a long time.
I had my Sapphire 5770 since November and have experienced frequent daily lock ups and screen corruption since day one, Sapphire and Asus both referred me to the ATI drivers as the problem, incidentally I had the exact same problems with 64 bit Ubuntu running the latest ATI drivers.

This is a shame because the ATI cards are better priced than NVidia and even with the new NVidia GTX480/470 cards are able to perform on par with them while drawing considerably less power than the Nvidia cards at full load and while idling

From AMD...

Dear Customer,

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[8200297226]} has been reviewed and updated.

Response and Service Request History:

We understand you're having a flickering issue withe the Sapphire HD5850. You have mentioned that the problem goes away if you increase the clock speeds. This shouldn't be the case as the issue should have been resolved with Catalyst 10.2. We would suggest going with warranty service as this could be a hardware issue.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.
