My problem is not a flicker one,
Oh how would love to get so far as to experience such a problem, instead I get corrupt screen then lock up 🙁

Running on stock Win7 and Linux VGA drivers and I experience no problem at all runs for days without a glitch.

I get this problem, whether playing games, surfing the net, writing a document or simply doing nothing, with the Catalyst drivers but not with the VGA drivers albeit that games are a no no running stock drivers, unless you enjoy painfully low FPS making any game unplayable, the ones that will even start that is.

So I can not see how this can be a hardware issue in my case??
Google has hundreds if not thousands of posts depicting my problem and after eliminating other causes with PSU upgrades, ram upgrades and turning off anything in the bios that is energy saving the problem still persists.

Other people who have RMA'd their cards with new ones still have the same problems, could they just be unlucky to get two bad ones in a row, or is the common factor the drivers I wonder?

Good luck RMAing your card, your problem does not sound like the same as the lock up problem.

That is not a fix but temporary work-around. If you google at all reviews for 5850 you will notice that they all idle at GPU Clock @ 157MHz and Memory Clock @ 300MHz @ around 36C [for example, http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1238/10/ ]. Reviewers never mention flicker problems. So my take is ATI gave reviewers good cards and turned around and gave us a revised cheaper version to save money. I had 2 Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic 1GB and 1 ASUS 5870 and ALL 3 of them FLICKERED like crazy at idle. Yes, I tried the suggested solution of creating a profile setting GPU Clock @ 400MHz and Memory Clock @900MHz and it did work but I not only wanted a fast video card but I also bought them because of power savings at idle. Both Sapphire and ATI stated to me that it was a hardware issue and that I should RMA. And I really doubt that the upcoming 10.4 will fix the FLICKER problem since they have known about this since late last year.

Well finally I know what the cause is of this flipping GSOD. I've built an I7 computer and got these lock-ups from the start.

Naturally, I thought it was down to overheating or the PSU. So, I went out and replaced my PSU with a Corsair 750W at a cost of £106.

However, it still flaming GSODed. At my wit's end and many other tests, memory etc, I wondered if it was something to do with the ASRock MB, and went on-line to see if any other users had this experience. What a revelation! The graphics card was to blame.

Does anyone think that users like myself, have a claim against ATI for the extra costs that I and others have incurred, buying unecessary hardware.

ATI - you suck!!

I am so glad I discovered ATI's bait & switch before pushing the button on the purchase of a 5870. Reading the countless postings by people who are suffering with theses cards leaves me with zero confidence in ATI. I honestly feel sorry for all of you, the ATI beta testers, out there. Perhaps the their revenue plan is to cut cost by having fewer engineers and reduce testing time before rolling out a new and cheaper product.

If it's true that you get what you pay for, loyal ATI customers didn't even get that much. I've stuck with ATI/AMD for 3 generations of CPUs and GPUs. I went back to Intel and Nvidia with an I7 CPU and a 480 GPU. The lack of issues are worth the additional cost.

Well i got new driver 10.6 and im still haveing this problem. At first the card was like beast run loot of games very well (5770) but later somehow i got fps drop. Also it only freezes in games with 10.5 but now i got fresh install of windows 7 64bit and i get freeze like every 10min even desktop,it so anoying it freezed even on this webpage.i turned theme to windows classic and it seems not to freeze anymore. So i gues we should all be getting our money back and not whaisting time.

I definetly know its not heat problem since i have very good cooler on it and it freezes even on idle.

My ATI HD5850 is STILL having these problems even with the latest drivers.

wow its so funny but we are now into mid 2011 and this still isnt sorted my saphire ATi hd 5870 is still crashing out as soon as it hits 53*C in the amd vision engine control center display with the clock setings set to lowest point fan set to 100% to try and combat it and i still get a black screen, clock freezes, caps non responsive etc etc... with monitor still reciving stay on sig from GPU

it sometimes sorts its self out and pops up saying video driver malfunctioned but recovered

windows 7 bullshit wants to stop its ati this does this in win xp, vista and erm ubunto so f off saying its win 7 or even windows for that matter its not its your hardware you havent put the temp cut off right in the drivers or something here is the evidence iv straped a large 15" desk fan to the side of my computer no black screen i take it away bam time shoots up yo 53*C there it is black screen

that there ATi is proof its a heat issue and dont give me ya room is to hot bull its lucky to get to 17*C air temp where i live what if i lived in egypt the air temp gets to 53*C some times

and i dont want to hear you need more cooling on your computer all i have to say to that well send it out you didnt specify that when ya sold it to me and if you didnt you should have sold me it with the extra cooling i needed

tranding standards and all that ....

I'm still getting gsod with catalyst 11.9. I got a 5800 radeon. A friend of mine got 4800 and he still gets gsod too. Where is my fix? I'm NEVER buying a radeon card again. Or rather I'm never gonna buy anything asus related again. I've tried basically everything. Gonna rma. Yes, Imad

Short answer to this problem is to boycott AMD hardware. If they cannot run qaulity control testing on their products at the factory level then they are worthless. I will never purchase an AMD product again - I had the issue with my ATI 5700 card and even now there is no proper fix. Absolute rubbish and ended up in the bin where it belongs.

Im still having this problem with civ V (a little) but with SWTOR its so often that its spoiles the game.
But if it isnt fixed after this much time I guese its not gona happen.
Its 2012 now...

Aaaa... Awesome ATI... The first time I go with a ATI graphics card and this is the crap I end up with.
Thanks and GOOD BYE ATI and Welcome back NVidia....
2012 and still this useless company can't fix their product.
I've gone to the latest drivers, tried pretty much every fix suggested and yet it still does not work.
