Face it, that toms is lying. Power DVD9 can do streaming undecoded stream over ATI 5870, and it works smoothly with DTS, and with a few quirks on Dolby part.

Also, this is DirectCompute application.

Now the question, why toms chose to say that PowerDVD can't do protected audio path, and no test for DirectCompute and OpenCL? Also, some games are using nvidia only features, using MSAA on nVidia and SSAA on ATI.

[citation][nom]DjEaZy[/nom]... and exsquize me, for my bad language, but i think intel's larrabee gonna suck monkeyballs... becouse the competition between AMD/ATi and nVidia in graphics front gonna bee hot... and the performance in cards gonna skyrocket... so there is gonna be no need for 80core tflop cpu and larrabee... the gpu will do it all...[/citation]

We discussed this with CyberLink--they tested with Integra receivers, but not Onkyo. Partial compatibility does not constitute compatibility in our books!

PreMature is right up until we get to see what Nvidia can muster with their GTX300 models coming out the end of this year. We will have to wait and see if we want to see the battle for the next gen DX11 GPU's. But for now, congratulations to AMD and ATI. I have to say besides the heat problems and weird case, this card is a beast.

Im still waiting for Core i7 gen2, USB 3.0 boards, SSD 2.0, Windows 7, sp1, and full blue ray capabilities on a MB and cheap BD drives.

No matter what, Nvidia, Ati or whatever, Apple sucks!

Remember that these benchmarks were done without specialized drivers and DX11, so performance will only get better in the future.

I got a bit worried though when I saw that the load power consumption was quite a bit higher than that of the 4890, while they both have TDP's of 190W, does this mean the 4890 never consumed anywhere near its TDP or does it mean the 5870 sometimes consumed more than the official TDP allows?
I don't want to have to buy a new PSU for this card, it's expense enough on its own.

If anyone waits for any of that stuff then they will be developing something smaller, faster, more powerful, etc with info drip fed about it years in advance. Just go out and buy a good system now with the money you have. Other wise you will wait forever as the best thing ever will only be tantalisingly a few months away but frustratingly always out of reach as newer stuff appears on the horizon.

I think my point is, from above, a good waiting period between upgrades is every 3 or 4 generations. I went from an X1950 to an HD4670, fantastic upgrade, but it will do me for now, looking forward to seeing the HD7000 series in a few years.

Start saving now.

Quite right.
I wetn from 1.6GHz solo core athlon with IGP to 2.8GHz pentium D with Nvidia 7500LE to ATi 4670, to i7 and 4870. I think I've had good upgrade path.
Doesn't change the fact I'm still going to buy this once it's a little more matured...

Only thing left to do is...

Compare how the ATI5870 runs 5 of the games on these CPUs:
i7 9xx - top end
i5
Core2Quad 2.8
Core2Dual 2.8
Pentium4 (Netbust)

AMD X4 (Top end model)
AMD X3 720
AMD X4 ($100 Quad core)
AMD X2 ($65 CPU)
AMD X1 To see the pain

[citation][nom]cangelini[/nom]Jasper,TBH, the architectural details are secondary to how the card performs. However, if you'd like a better idea of what tessellation can do for you, check out the picture of the Alien on page six![/citation]

Oh yes, and Anandtech has a nice explaination on their review of the HD 5870 too 😉

I read the review here and the one on Guru3D as well, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway was a game that flatlined at 111FPS until res was cranked to 2560 x 1600, they were using a Core i7 965 OC to 3.75Ghz, the game was being bottlenecked by the CPU. So the information to take from that is not to bother with the lower grades of CPU as the graphics cards power would not give significant advantage due to the deficiency of the CPU speed.

In other words, don't even bother buying this graphics card unless you run a Core i7 system, have 6Gb+ of RAM and a 30" monitor or you will be wasting its potential.

Still rocking duel OC'd 295's but they wont be top dog for long 🙁, out of curiosity why wasn't that configuration tested?

wonder if they'll be able to keep the thermal envelope under 300W for the X2 version.

as always a great review.

GPU reviews can become more interesting by adding professional workstation cards [Quadro/FirePro] to the tests. With the relevant applications benchmarks, 3ds max, AutoCAD, Maya, Solidworks, Lightwave, Adobe Premiere/Photoshop/Illustrato.

Gaming vs Professional benchmarks, the results will benefit lots of people.

Finally the video card recession / video card great depression is over.

We might even see games that can match up to UT2k4 or even see the first games again after 5 years of mediocre games out there.

Now this is more like the ATI I am used too and the reason I owned a desktop with ATI9600 and bought a Apple laptop/powerbook G4 for the ATI9600 / ATI inside not the junk inside since nv7800gtx was normal.

Either way I will take 2x Ati5870 or Ati5870x2 no questions asked.
Just need a Ati5870 for a basic laptop video card + inbuilt Ati5830 IGP then we are set.

Maybe Steve Wobbs "lmao" can use this and build the first Apple Intel laptop since G4 powerbooks, hey might then buy a Apple laptop again or anything Apple again.

Hopefully VMware / virtualbox will get with "4+ cpu" / Ati stream and make my live easier.
Software developers should really start using Ati stream / Cuda instead of the i7c 920/965 memory controller to do the work.

PS> 188w man that is nothing my old nv6600's that replaced the Ati9600 used what like 200w/240w minm each in sli rig, had to get a huge power supply just to run them.

You go ATI finally someone with balls and common sense.
Just get your driver division with it with "HDMI overscan bug"

What no Lynnfield? Once again, just like every other site we get little information if this card is worth anything to the majority of computer owners. Does it pin an x8 pci-e? Does it take a 16x slot to full utilize? Can an Core2 push enough data via DDR2 or DDR3 to fuel the card to perform? You gave us nothing but the talking points ATI and NVIDIA hand out already. Worthless. Next time give us some actual reference points besides the usual card swaps. I mean the simplest of solutions is to use the MEDIAN computer system on the market as the base system config and then at least you can tell us "It's worth the money if you have X system".

Anyone want to make his or her purchase future-proof must wait for the 2 GB edition of 5870, especially if planning to go crossfire, otherwise there will be plenty of processing power with only 1 GB of effective ram. Besides DX 11 games are expected to benefit from the extra vram at high resolutions, AA and detail sttings.

Forget having ATI's babies...have Chris' lol

One thing, Chris: I didn't see 2x 4890s. That would be my only suggestion to show how your single and dual 5890s compared to the 4890s in both single and dual configs.

Otherwise, fantasic article. You made me feel ignorant with all the technical details. Now, I have to go look up all these new terms and learn something. Way to go. lol :)

Although it looks awesome, I still think once the price point drops I'll be investing in 2x 4870x2s or 2x 4890s. I am tempted tho, so I can have a total Dragon/Fusion or whatever AMD's combined platform is. I'm still hoping they have something up their sleeve with this and that there's a performance "pot of gold" at the end of their rainbow.

Very very good article though. Hope to see more from you. Thanks very much.
