I have never tried Avira, but I currently have AVG free installed on 13 or 14 of my systems, Win XP, Vista 32 and 64 included. No problems so far!

Avira has live updates and it's FREE!

Also free is Avast home, I use it for more than 1 year on 4 home systems, twice a day online updates.
