Yes. I need the best one.
You don't need to drop $500 to get a great AM4 motherboard. So if you want the best you're looking at something like an Asus X570 Crosshair Hero VIII. The will get you top of the line LN-2 overclocking capabilities...and still have money left over.

Then there's crazy extreme...Asrock's X570 Aqua. Fully liquid cooled and simply a waste...and very expensive.

Concur on the B550 boards. However, the "best" motherboard may not be the "best" for you. As always it depends on what your needs are. I wanted WiFi 6 and since I am a sucker for "new", I wanted pcie 4.0 so I opted for an X570 motherboard instead. I got the ASUS TUF x570 Pro. It was just released several months ago so it's one of the newer X570 boards.

It has been perfect for my needs, but truth be told, if the x570 MSI Tomahawk was in stock I would have went with that since it is known to have one of the best VRM for x570 boards, which equates to great overall system stability, especially in the overclocking department. And you're not paying as much a premium like an ASUS ROG VIII hero.

Again, it all depends on what you want, some boards have tons of USB ports and that is more important for them or others want SLI (lol SLI) so what's best for one may not be best for another. Just list what you want and find what board closely matches that.

Otherwise, the easiest answer is buy the most expensive board and that will land you somewhere near the "best". Good luck!

Alright. But if I buy this process, I don't need to change anything in my build? Will everything be compatible?
It all should work. Just get a good motherboard. Again I strongly recommend the ROG Strix B550-F, using it and it's fantastic. There are some good choices above too if you want higher end, such as the MSI MEG X570 UNIFY or the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero. I wouldn't go with a Gigabyte motherboard personally, had two of them die on me.

No reason to get X570 with whiny chipset fan for 3600X if you don't want to have 2+ PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives. In reality good B550 board in 150-200$ price range is more than sufficient. Even cheapo ASRock B550M Pro4 board works like charm. A list of my nephew's build parts below

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qNZN2V

And at today you can even go straight for 5600X CPU - perform a way faster in games, but not much more expensive.

If you need the two extra cores go Ryzen 7 3700X, the 3800X is just a 3700X with more power draw.

Correct. Though at today 5600X is even better if you can get it. Same power requirements as 3700X have.

Yes, everything in your list will work just fine. An observation about market availability: you're not likely to find 5600X CPU's readily available except at scalper prices just like GPU's. Recent articles and comments from Lisa Su are that this crunch will continue 'until mid-2021' for CPU's and GPU's. She had previously told us it would be early in '21. IMO, it's hard to say mid-year really will bring respite with the crunch for 7nm wafers being what it is since Apple is buying up TSMC wafer capacity for their over-priced products.

What is your intended useage for the system? I'm asking because you are comfortable keeping that low-spec RX 460 GPU. While I don't know what your current system/CPU is that GPU will be such a limiter for gaming you're not likely to see any improvement in gaming performance.

If your purpose is to improve performance for creativity (image rendering, for instance) or other CPU intensive processing chores then a CPU with more cores will probably help and the RX460 wouldn't hinder that much.

One thing I'd suggest is to look at pre-built systems. If you choose wisely you might find one with a much better GPU included and at a manageable over-all system price compared to scalper prices for CPU and GPU's, although you may have to settle for some compromises. The OEM's who produce pre-builts can get hold of GPU's and CPU's before the scalpers and miners snatch them up.

Thank you.

  • System Usage from Most to Least Important: Game development/Rendering.
  • Parts Preferences: The best of the best.
  • Additional Comments: I'm a game developer, not a gamer 😉 I need to build a PC to make games, not to play them.
I would suggest getting more cores for a development system as building a project scales pretty well with more cores. Perhaps look for a 5900X or 5950X if you have the means.

Do you mean... AMD Ryzen 9 5950X AM4 BOX? 😨
I have enough money, but the problem is not with my finances. I'm afraid that this processor will not be compatible with my current build. If I'll buy this high end processor, I'll need to be start all over again.

I'm not sure I follow you. The Ryzen 5900X and 5950X will work with an AM4 socket motherboard (B550, X570) the same as a 3600X or 3800X .
