Brother 440-cn scanner will not scan

Hi. I suddenly get an error message on the computer when I try to access the scanner. (Brother 440CN) I get "operation could not be completed. (error message 0.00000015)The device is not ready.
I downloaded drivers etc. It worked fine for months.
Does anyone know what to do?

Make sure the scanner is turned on and that the scanner cathode tube is lit.
