I've bought me an asus Motherboard( p4p800 se) and a Processor (prescott 2.8Ghz; 800FSB).
I'm thinking about 512Mb DDR400(2X256)since my motherboard has dualchannel.

My colleagues said that it would perform more or less 5% faster vir 2X256 as with 1X512.

Any advise???

Your colleague doesn't know what he's talking about. P4s make full use of dual channel, and can use allt he memory bandwidth you can give them.

Athlons on the other hand, vary in how much they utilize dual channel, and often will only see a 5% increase(though my understanding is that this has changed some with the s939 chips).

But ignore him, get 2x256(or 2x512 if you can squeeze it in) and definitely run it dual channel

Your colleagues are probably thinking of the minimal impact dual channel has on the Athlon XP. The AXP had a SINGLE DDR bus and couldn't take advantage of dual-channel DDR RAM. The P4 has a Quad Data Rate bus so it has pleanty of bandwidth to utilize dual channel DDR SDRAM.
