Can we update usb 2 0 to usb 3 0 of a dell laptop

Upgrading to USB 3.0 would require a whole new motherboard. With laptops this get incredible fiddly and is easier just to purchase a new laptop with the required number of USB 3.0 ports.

As 'esrever' said, the device your transferring data to would also need to be USB 3.0 compliant to make use of the extra speed the port can offer.

Hi,
Hi,
My name is Ajit Singh and i work for dell social media and community.

I am afraid a USB 2.0 cannot be upgraded to USB 3.0. First you need a motherboard which can support USB 3.0 to get the maximum out of it and secondly both the receiver device and sending device should be on USB specification. One more point is, if you check connector on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 they are different, so if you will try to connect a USB 3.0 cable on USB 2. 0 port it will not fit.

So it is a must to get a new system which is already configured to USB 3.0.

Thanks
Ajit Singh

Hello,
I think that everyone is missing what you are trying to accomplish, as I solved this problem on my Toshiba satellite. My laptop has usb 2.0 ports and no express card slot, and rightly so, as others have stated you'll need to get a new laptop (due to motherboard) to enjoy the higher transfer rates....unless... you also have an Express Card Slot or an eSata port on your laptop. My laptop did not have an express card slot but did have an eSata port. Do what I did. Buy an eSata to USB 3.0 cable to get your eSata port connected to an externally powered usb 3.0 hub with a coupler. Any externally powered USB 3.0 hub you have or buy will do. First, get an eSata to USB cable to go from the PC to the hub, I suggest the [Vantec NexStar eSATA 6Gb/s to USB 3.0 Adapter (CB-ESATAU3-6)], next get a female to female usb 3.0 coupler to connect the 3.0 hub's male cable end to your esata to USB 3.0 cable, I suggest [Kingtop USB 3.0 Adapter Coupler]. Now your (any type) "externally powered" USB 3.0 hub ( remember eSata is not powered) can connect into your laptop at 3.0 transfer speeds and your 3.0 devices requiring power can be fed what they need from the hub. Again if you "have" an express card slot, just get one with usb 3.0 and plug it in, but note some of these cards have the "power supply" sold separately so investigate what comes with the card itself, that's what I did for my Lenovo T510 laptop, get one with a power adapter that plugs into the side of the express card. But if you "don't" have a express card port and you "do" have an eSata port, this is one way to solve this problem.
1. No 3.0 ports, but have express card slot = Use the Express Card Slot, easiest cheapest solution.
2. No 3.0 ports, No Express card slot = see solution above at about 40-50 bucks.
3. No 3.0 ports, No Express card slot, No eSata port = bad news for you! Buy new PC! Peace!
Note: If all you are wanting is just and only a way to connect an external drive and are in the situation #2 above, Vantec sells a case that has the eSata connection for the transfer speed and the case has a second connection to an existing usb 2.0 port [NST-200SU-BK], that it uses the 2.0 port as a power port only to drive the one HDD/SSD device and uses the eSata connection for data transfer. It will move data as fast as a 3.0 connection. I'd go with the hub solution above as then you can connect all kinds of 3.0 devices, multiple drives or whatever, but it depends on what you are trying to do, single external drive interface or multiple devices.
Note 2: This is for laptop solutions only, desktops are easily upgraded by getting a PCI card with 3.0 ports and plugging into available slot.

Hi Magusrex001, my laptop was toshiba satellite also and I found your solution quite logic. however i did bought 2 items (USB3.0 male to esata female bridge adapter and also a esata male-male cable), but it dint works, im wondering is it need to have the Vantec NexStar eSATA 6Gb/s to USB 3.0 Adapter (CB-ESATAU3-6) ? As I need to put multi-monitor on my laptop but i lack of VGA port, thus I bought USB3.0 to VGA adapter but my laptop dint have USB 3.0 port. So that your solution with the USB3.0 hub can support multi-monitor as well?

Hi Sir

I had refer to below method, my laptop has Lenovo Z570 has eSATA port, I had bought CB-ESATAU3-6 ( cost me USD60) and connect from eSATA laptop to External HDD 3.5" with power adapter with casing.
My laptop can't detect the External HDD 3.5.
WHY ??? How it works at your side?
Are you provide false information to public ?
