I am trying to troubleshoot a Windows XP system that will not boot into
Windows XP Home. When the system starts up, the "We apologize for the
inconvenience ..." screen appears. No matter whether I select Safe Mode, Safe
with Networking, Safe Command Prompt, Last Good, or Log on Normally, the
system simply reboots and the We apologize screen appears again -- no Windows
XP splash screen or anything else. Note - if I choose a Safe Mode option,
modules are listed through MUP.SYS before the system spontaneously reboots.
I tried using a Win XP CD-ROM, went into the Recovery Console and ran
CHKDSK/R. After running for an hour, CHKDSK said it found errors and
corrected them. But when I rebooted, the same symptoms still occurrred. I
then tried FIXMBR; still the same symptoms.
I booted using a WinPE CD-ROM, and was able to see the contents of the C:
drive, which appeared to be okay.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Might this be a hardware issue (bad disk)?
