Hi,

I am using my pc mostly for work, but also enjoy VR and desktop gaming and use my nvidia shield to stream to my tv. this works very well however lately I bought final fantasy remake and couldnt get the game to work at 4K. this also happened with a couple other games. I am looking to see what should i upgrade for today's gaming and possibly good for the next 3 years.

I am looking at the asus rtx 4090 graphic card but it is super hard to get (havent seen anywhere who has it available). I know my motherboard/cpu and memory would also benefit from an upgrade.

So my question is : should i upgrade only the video card or only the cpu/ram/mb, or all of it? what would you upgrade if you were in my place ? budget limitation would be ~6k (altho if less the better) and i am a fan of Intel/Asus.

current PC Specs :

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz
ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-H GAMING
Corsair CMW32GX4M4C3000C15 4x8gb (DDR4)
WD_BLACK SN850 1TB
ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 GAMING OC 8G
SAMSUNG U28E590 x2

thanks for the help !

Ok, so this looks strangely like the pcpartpicker i've done a few days ago !
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/KNczrD

So your recommendation would be to go full speed and upgrade everything then ? this is what i am very tempted to do (still undecided) but was hoping to see if i could last a bit longer with the current parts.

with regards to the part, seem that the Asus TUF is a bit more available but appears to have the same specs so i probably could get it at the same time as other parts.

What programs do you use?

Aside from gaming apps and games i also enjoy video processing like Adobe premiere, photoshop. I record gameplays with OBS.

I also run a plex server.

For VR, i use my quest2 through virtual desktop streamer.

for work i just use citrix, zoom etc.
You want a 420 AIO for that unlocked i9. I would think 64GB would be sufficient for your needs.

The monitors you have are 4k 60Hz monitors.

For 60FPS gaming, your i7 8700 can handle those without any problems!

Which VR do you have? If the VR goes upto 120hz, then you might consider a platform upgrade to a new CPU/Mobo. But if you are happy with your current performance, just get a 4090 and maybe a new PSU if your current one is not compatible.

If you are a casual gamer, i would suggest you to get a proper gaming monitor with your 4090 instead. G-sync will give you a smooth experience for 120hz screens even if your FPS are about 80-100.

When you are saying 64GB would be sufficient, what specifically are you refering to ?

also regarding the AI, as part of my list mentioned above, i was thinking about getting the corsair icue h150i/corsaire 4000D because i think if i get the 4090, i would also need to upgrade the case since my 2080 fit just barely in the current case i am using. would that be sufficient ?

Thanks for the suggestions

yeah i do know that im currently limited at 60Hz with the current monitor but since i am perfectly fine running games at 60fps and im not into first person shooters i think i should be good.

I have the Oculus Quest 2 and run it at 120Hz so thats the only time i really go beyond 60Hz. even my TV is stuck at 60Hz.

as for the monitor(s) wow, 1.5k just for one. i'll probably enjoy more having two 27 inchs having 120/144. ill look into Samsung or less expensive alternatives (as long i can get 1ms latency, i should be fine, i think!)

now, i did mentioned earlier that im a fan of Asus, but i see alot of suggestions for MSI. i should really look into that because if its overall better, then i would be unwise not giving it a shot and in the end save a bit of money to help me getting everything i need (including the monitors).

thanks for the suggestions

I will warn you now that you most likely will not be able to run that ram, at full speed. DDR5 and 4 sticks of ram is something that still doesn't work very well. Also, if you might want to consider AM5, for more future upgrade potential.

I see, there's no 2x64, but i can do with only 64 no issues if i only get the 2x32 dual channel and hopefully a bios update in the future can improve this. for the AM5, i have always had Intel motherboard/cpu and i've honestly only tried AMD once, maybe 15 years ago (maybe longer). I'd still want to have an RTX for my Shield TV, but i also heard that nvidia/AMD isnt quite optimal (but i dont know, its just what i've heard so please dont get mad if you really like AMD).
I should probably eventually start slow and get to know the AMD hardware a bit more, but im not sure i would want to spend 6000$ on that just yet.

No worries, I just wanted to point it out, as 13th gen is the end for LGA1700, where as AM5 has 2+ years left, for support/upgrades. You really cannot go wrong, with either, I just personally like the being able to upgrade my CPU, without having to change my motherboard as well. I have an all AMD rig, and an Intel/Nvidia rig. Up until my RX 6800, I ran an RTX 2060, with my AMD rig, without issue.

I see, looks like next gen is LGA1851 for Intel 14th and there's no release dates yet, so this mean that i wont be able to reuse the montherboard if i want to upgrade the cpu, i think im fine with that since i currently have an 8700 non-k and i didnt look for any upgrade until today so if i get the 13900K, i should be good for a while. only thing is that i would guess that next gen motherboards/CPU would probably have better support running two dual channel 2 stick rams like im currently doing on what im having right now but i think 64 would be enough.

in the meantime, ill definitely think about getting some experience with AMD and that shouldnt be a problem since i can just reuse parts of what i already have and replace the z390 and 8700 with an AMD duo and test it out with my 2080.

thank you for pointing that out.
