can't install CDRW on Micron Vetix

I'm trying to install a Plextor 8/4/32 CD writer on my Micron Vetix LXI. It has a Pentium 200 and 128 Mb of RAM (yes, 128) and Windows 2000 Professional. It won't recognize the CDRW. Any ideas? In no particular order, here's the case history:

- when the computer is turned on and the messages come up before Windows begins, there is a line that says "Plextor CD-RW 8/4/32..." etc etc.

- I can get the Device Manager to show a new "unknown device" but it won't identify it.

- downloaded a BIOS upgrade from Micron site and put on a floppy but the programs won't run.

- tried changing the shunt-thingy on the CDRW from "Master" to "Cable select"

- went into Setup and changed IDE Master and Slave settings to "Auto detect" -- didn't help

- motherboard only has one IDE port

- Device Manager shows three IDE devices, but the hard drive, old CD-ROM, and floppy drive are all SCSI. Two of the devices have yellow symbol and "!" because of IRQ conflict on 14, which won't accept changes. Don't know what the unconflicted device could be.

- The people at Micron say I may need a third-party IDE adapter. I don't like the idea of trying to install more things that may not work. But I think my computer was made before ATAPI existed so maybe I'll have to?
- yes, the power is hooked up

Thanks much.
