CD-RW and DVD-ROM

I have a five year old computer with Windows XP Home Edition, with a Sony
CD-RW and a Toshiba DVD-ROM. The Sony is a CRX175A1 and the Toshiba is a
SD-M1502. Both drives are operational, but the do not show in My Computer. In
Device Manager, under Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management,
shows that the drives are there, but that the drivers are either corrupt or
missing. In fact, this is the exact message that I get: "Windows cannot load
the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing.
(Code 39)" I get this for both devices. I can't update the drivers because I
either don't have drivers to update or there are no updates at all. I have
tried everything that I know to be right to fix this problem, but it has been
like this for nearly a week now. Even system restores do not work. I would
reload the drivers off the Windows CD, but the only problem is that the
Windows won't see the drive at all, so that won't work. I would be glad to do
anything except: 1) format the hard drive 2) get a new computer (though I
could use an upgrade) 3) get new drives because they both work when and if
the drivers do. Please help.

First, try uninstalling the drives from Device Manager
(Start-Run-Devmgmt.msc) by right clicking on the devices and
unisntalling them. Once you have done that, reboot and let Windows
reinstall them. If they still don't work, try these:
