[SOLVED] Central Storage Device

Hey Guys! I have got a question here. Actually I want to make a central location of data storage. What I mean by that is, I want to store data such as photos, movies, documents, etc. in one place and from where I can access it from all the computers in my home like a server kinda! Please tell me an economic way I mean not too expensive for a home. Thanks in advance...

Okay! Can I keep it running all the time or I have to shut down sometimes? I don't actually have idea about this that's why asking! Sorry if I sound dumb xD

The disks can be set to automatically spin down (mine does). The controller part runs all the time and will spin up the disks when you access it.

I started my server by re-purposing old PC parts and using FreeNas for the operating system.
(single core Amd Sempron CPU, 2GB ram, 1Tb hdd & freenas ran from a usb stick)
The current server runs Windows Server and a meager 16tb's of drive space.

Something else you need to consider is how you will backup the important stuff that you will have on it.
