How do I change the icons of all the folders other than special
folders at a time in Windows XP?

Try this:

You cannot change it all at one time. You will need to do it individually. That is if I understood your request

I tried to do this once, but it seems that the icon location is in a
crutial system file (%SystemRoot%system32SHELL32.dll) and to change
this icon it would mean decompiling (as far as nessasery) the dll,
changing that paticulare icon and then recompiling it so that the dll
is capable of all the operations it is supposed to do, plus that new
icon. Then (hopefully) windows explorer’s icon should change as well
(at least that the theory). Of course the danger is that the new
shell32.dll would not work, and windows would brake with a "OMFG!!!
WTF??!?!11!" error. Resorce hacker is your only hope to do this
(http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
), of course the potential is that shell32.dll will brake so make sure
you back it up and remeber where you back it up so you can use
recovary console (if nessasery) to restore it.

You cannot customize the default icon for a folder in Windows; however,
you can make a shortcut to a folder and change the look of the shortcut
icon.
To make a shortcut to a folder and change the look of the shortcut icon:
1. Open My Computer and browse to the folder that you want.
2. Right-click the folder, and then click Create Shortcut. If you are
prompted to place the shortcut on the desktop, click Yes.
3. Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then
click Change Icon.
4. Click the picture of the icon you would like the shortcut to use,
click OK, and then click OK.

See the "Shell icons" part in this page:
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/icon.html

The openfolder.zip example works in WinXP as well.

Hi Ramesh

I've tried the tweak from openfolder.zip and can't get it to work on my
machine (XP Pro SP2). The .reg file has written correctly to the
Registry and the icon file path is correct, but Explorer takes not a
blind bit of notice :) Any ideas?

Thanks, Ramesh. I did reboot straight away after making the Registry
change, but changing the icon size and back again has done the trick.
(It also changed the layout of my desktop icons, but luckily I have
Kelly's Save and Restore Desktop Icons fix to deal with that) :)

Thank you very much!

A reboot might help. Or, try any of these:

1. Right-click Desktop, choose Properties, Appearance Tab.
2. Click Advanced button, choose Icon from the drop-down list
3. Set it's size to 31 and press OK, OK
4. Repeat the steps (1-3) and set the Icon size to 32 (defaults)

-or-

Download TweakUI for Windows XP, and rebuild the icons.

I remember, I asked the same question two years back and David Candy
responded at that time :)

It doesn't always work. I initially concluded that this no longer worked in XP, then a week later it started working. Often it works straight away, sometime resetting the memory iconcache worked. But sometimes it just took a week to work (but usually less than a day).

Both reg files work on XP. It was just the delay that made me think the format had changed.

Not to mention that in XP it won't show in titlebar if the folder bar is showing (unllike 98). You can have green in titlebar or folder list but not at same time. So if you click Folders on toolbar the titlebar icon will change.

Yes, just noticed it. But where does it come from. It's the shell32.dll,45
but explorer does not read it. May be something to do with a Resource
(negative icon) ?
