Cheap software for a new burner

What's a good burner software title these days for cd's and dvd's. I just
built a new machine with an OEM burner that didn't come with any software.
It pains me to buy Roxio or Nero. No more than I use the burner portion of
the drive, I hate to put an $80 dent in my wallet. Anyone know a good
shareware or freeware that's simple to use.

The older Nero 5.5 (OEM) is readily available for as little as $7 shipped!,
just search http://www.pricegrabber.com for "Nero 5.5".

Granted, it's doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the new 6.0 retail
release, but for $7, it's a good deal and works great. No spyware, no
freeware anomolies, etc., commerical quality at a reasonable price. If you
like, you might then want to consider the FULL Nero 6.0 release.

If you're on Windows XP, you can select the files, right-mouse click and
select "Copy to CD or Device."

Or try to buy a used copy of Nero from newsgroups or ebay. Ebay has one
"Buy it now" for $8.99 on Nero 6.

That will copy almost anything and has it's own help forum and will
support DVD burning later I'm led to believe

I have been told that burn4free has a lot of spyware that it installs
on your system.

You can pick up HotBurn at many local office supply stores for about 10 or
20 bucks. It's simple and works great.

The ones I have seen only work with the drive brand they are sold with.
Some of the drives are on sale after rebate for $ 10 to $ 20 that come with
the full retail package including Nero for that drive or another softwear.

The OEM software is the full version, in fact all copies of Nero that I have
seen are the full copy, the only difference is the serial number that you
put in. The serial number decides if it will work with only one make of
drive, if it is the full version or just the 'lite' express version or even
if you are allowed to rip MP3s. In Nero, under the Help menu is an option to
'enter a new serial number' for just this reason.

There are ways to get a better serial number.

By crippled I was saying that I don't think the OEM version is the same as
the"boxed" retail version that sells for $79 online and elsewhere. I think
some of the features are "turned off" in the OEM version.

Actually, it's only firmware-locked. Try it sometime ...

Now, you now quite often get "Nero Express" ... which is Nero, but
with a wizard front end. That's also the same, just again locked to the
drive.

But not crippled ...

The trial version of Nero is a 'crippled' (by serial number) of the full
product.

The features are turned off by the serial number that is put into Nero.

Change the serial number and you change the features

Change the serial number and it will make it work with other makes of
drives.

So in how many computers can you install the same cd drive?

So you install the drive in your computer, install the software, and it
works fine.

If you want the disks you burn to work in any computer, use cd-r disks.
CD-RW disks MAY not work in other computers.
