Does anyone know if its possible to find out if an Athlon Thunderbird CPU has been remarked and overclocked? I've been reading through seller ratings on www.resellerratings.com and it appears its fairly common, so I want to make sure I don't get ripped off.

If you have access to the CPU it would be easy to tell if it has been overclocked. Several of the L1, L7 and/or other bridges would be cut and repaired. I don't think such modifications could be easily disguised.

If you can't read the top of the CPU with AMD's printing on the CORE, don't buy it, or if you bought a whole computer from an outfit, send it back and tell them they ripped you off, get your money back and build your own computer. Most vendors I have seen are not really remarking them, but closing the L1 bridges and testing the max speed at which they will run, and selling them as overclock to ???? mhz stable.
