Civilization 6: Aztecs Guide

If you have preordered the game, then you will have access to the Aztecs right from the get go. Otherwise, you'll have to wait three months for them to become available to play. The Aztecs excel at the early game, by going to war as soon as they possibly can and growing strong with every successful battle.

Aztec's Leader

Montezuma is the leader of the Aztecs, and brings the ability 'Gifts for the Tlatoani' to help his civilization rise to greatness. This will cause any unique luxury resource to give all combat units a +1 to combat strength, as well as providing the resource to two additional cities. You have to own the resource within your own lands, and have built an improvement upon it for this to be applied.

Unique Ability

The Aztecs get the civilization ability of 'Legend of the Five Suns'. This ability will allow you to spend builders to quickly complete districts. You can use the builders to speed the construction of the district by 20% each time, so you can effectively build a district completely with two workers and still have one build point left. Or more, depending on your current civics. This is best combined with the unique ability of the Eagle Warriors. More on that later.

Unique building

The Tlachtli is the unique building for the Aztec people, and is built in the entertainment district. It provides Amenities, Faith, and Great General Points to the city it is build in. Using this can allow you to carry on waging war long after other civilizations would be struggling with war weariness, while it will also generate further points towards getting additional generals for your armies.

Unique Unit

The Aztecs will get access to the unique unit 'Eagle Warriors'. This unit will replace the standard warrior units, and is significantly stronger as well. These guys have 28 combat strength, as opposed to the 20 combat strength of the usual warrior. Whenever they defeat an opposing civilization's units they have a chance to capture them, turning them into a new builder unit that you can use to upgrade your own tiles or help to build your own districts. Once you start upgrading these guys to swordsmen they will lose that ability though, but remember, with each luxury resource you capture for your own they will get one additional combat strength. With seven luxury resources under your control, these guys will actually perform as strong as other civilizations swordsmen.

With all of these skills and units at their disposal, the Aztecs are practically forced into war as soon as they meet their first neighbor. If they wait at all they are going to end up becoming obsolete quickly. They will thrive in a prolonged war where others will fall. Use this to your advantage.
