So my PC has been running with a 860 evo as a C: drive. i wanted something faster so i got a 970 evo plus and i cloned them.
Now i have 2 drives with Windows on them, I put the 970 evo plus in. now my 860 evo cannot be detected anymore, not even in the bios nor the disk management software.
I've tried everything. I tried it in multiple M.2 slots on the motherboard and it just won't get detected. What am i doing wrong here?

Solution
I’m using an Asus ROG Z490 a gaming motherboard, i'm using m.2’s ive tried all m.2 slots and ive made sure the m.2 slots work by putting another SSD in there, that worked fine.
Asus ROG STRIX Z490-a gaming - this one. Right?

The board has 2 M.2 slots.
1 x M.2_1 socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)
1 x M.2_2 socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage devices support (PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)

You can use 860 evo and 970 evo in slot M.2_1.
You can use only 970 evo in slot M.2_2. 860 evo will not work in M.2_2 slot.
(860 evo is sata, 970 evo is nvme/pcie)

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

If you go through posts by other users on the same matter, you'll see that we advice on reinstalling the OS as opposed to cloning the drive to save you from all the hair tugging(and probably a bald spot). You should format both drives, after you make sure that you're on the latest BIOS version for your platform. Desktop or a laptop?

Windows 10? Fabricate your bootable USB installer using Windows Media Creation Tools.

What motherboard?
Old 860 evo - is it 2.5"drive or M.2 form factor drive?

Using nvme M.2 drive sometimes disables one or 2 sata ports.

Connect your old sata drive to a different sata port (if 2.5"drive).
If old sata drive is M.2, then check motherboard specifications. Not all M.2 slots may support sata M.2 drives.

But why doesn't this SSD show up anymore, I ordered a USB M.2 adapter, should arrive tomorrow. I’ll see how that works out.

The 860 evo m.2 is a sata drive.
It will only work in m.2-1 that is the only slot where it can be detected on your motherboard.
The 970 evo plus is a pcie ssd and could go in either slot.
Samsung has a pcie driver, perhaps downloading that could help; good idea anyway.

I would think that a pcie m.2 adapter card would be faster and more useful than a usb connection.

Is it possible that the 860 device needs a firmware update?
Samsung magician can do some testing.

oh its because its SATA!, I would use it in that first slot but I have two 970’s now and one 860 I guess I’ll just use the USB M.2 SATA adapter I ordered to make use of it. wow thank you, truly appreciated.

yeah but now i have two 970’s and one 860

and both 970s are on the motherboard already, 860 wouldnt work with the pcie adapter i have but im assuming its because its SATA

860 evo would need m.2 to sata adapter instead.
