I was in line for an upgrade around Christmas but this CPU has me thinking (maybe earlier?).

The C2D has all the attributes I need for my next build as well (HTPC).

Before you pretty much had to choose between a performance oriented or quiet HTPC. Now can have cake and eat it too (video card possibly still prohibitive).

Possibility for a quiet and powerful HTPC is here.
 
sorry for the tardy reply ( dont mean to qoute, but its best explained taht way) but yeah i ha eva newburst cpu, its hot as what, and it idles around 35c in the summer its horrible for temp, but its alright performance for how old it is
 
Yeah, That info listed above and a very slick Liquid Nitro cooling system works wonders 😀.

I wonder what that setup costs per hour of running 😀

Right now electricity in my area is about 0.12 dollar a kilowatt hour, that's 12 cents a kilowatt hour, that is essentially 10 one hundered watt lightbulbs running for 1 hour. Say your computer averages 200 watts per hour, that is 0.2 kilowatt hours, so about 1/6 th of 0.12 dollars is about 0.02 dollars per hour, or 2 cents per hour.

Not that much.....

I keep my computer on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week --- at 12 cents a kilowatt hour, assuming full load, say 250 watts (I have a Presshootttt) assuming a 5 week month, then I pay about 25 dollars a month to run my computer. This is an over estimate, but that's how much it costs me in the worst case usage scenario.


I am sorry if I was unclear in my question, I was referring to the Liquid Nitro Cooling - I have no idea how long time an x6800 can run at 5.5 GHz when he fills that pipe with liquid nitro, and what such a tank of it costs :)

Or if it is even possible to continuously use a computer set up like that.
 
you probably could but you'd quickly whip up a huge energy and liquid nitrogen bill at the end of it :lol: hehe


but then again if you have the money to buy all these premium components and the like then you could probably afford such high cooling costs ...i guess...

Well after 2+ weeks of owning my X6800 i must say this is best CPU experience i had in a long while.

Everything runs fast. Windows boots in 1.25 horz bars.

I could Overclock to 3.2Ghz on stock voltage, and getting to my goal of 3.47Ghz with air cooling was easy as pie.

I spent weeks drooling over this cpu, i can't imagine how i could top this feeling of having a kick ass computer lol Everyting seems so damn fast.

I hope more people will purchase these Core 2's as they are worth every penny.
 
Same here, Artmic. My x6800 is damn fast. Not only that but I convinced my lab to get some Woodcrst machines, so now I'm Core 2 across the board.

I will likely be starting a Kentsfield/Cloverton thread soon.

You will be tempting me with that Kenstfield thread no doubt, i will be drooling for a quad @3.6Ghz lol
I wonder when intel will release quad's at that speed.

to reply to you I should say a quad-core cpu at 3.60Ghz clock speed needs to be 21nm & having a damned powerfool cooling

no, you don`t care the clocks it could offer , care the short stability time and the reached core temp... the core were became hell while 80 celsius temp. :? :wink:

I say again: 65 nano & Air Cooling are not sufficient. 45nm or dreamly 21nm & water cooling are recommended

I'm just starting to read through all of this great info, I apologize if that link had been posted already. Interesting to see, the oc'd 6300 actually beat the oc'd 6700 in one test, not sure as to why though, as it gives up roughly 600mhz to it. I was a loyal amd fan and I'm seriously leading towards upgrading to a 6700 for my next rig, the possibilities with just air cooling are far superior to that of which AMD currently offers, even if their current chips are only aimed at the mid-range, that just means when their new line comes out their price range is going to be out of my budget.

i was also just thinking, do i even need a core 2 duo? How much fast would the core 2 duo be compared to a regular core duo on 32 bit windows?:roll:
 
depends on what you're doing (what applications), although i think it wont be too much faster (also depends on the model you're getting eg getting a e6300 and benching it against a 2ghz core duo would not be that fair as the core duo 2ghz would probably cost more, therefore you might be able to buy say the e6600, although the e6300 would probably beat core duo 2ghz.) :lol:

oh and the mobile core 2 duos (merom)are released now and i suspect you could probably buy a laptop with it, they are like conroe and allendale but use less energy, they should 'offer 20% more performance than core duo whilst still using the same power' intel says :wink:

Dude, core 2 is a MUCH more efficient architecture than core 1. Any of the core 2's out now would smoke your 640.

Dude, core 2 is a MUCH more efficient architecture than core 1. Any of the core 2's out now would smoke your 640.

thats why im getting a E6400 :wink: (its got 640 in the name lol). :)
 
Artmic, what CPU cooler are you using on you X6800? And how far did the stock cooler get you when overclocking?

Before I start, let me say that I read the first and 33rd pages... too many pages to read in this thread! :lol:

Anyway, got a question... first being--- what is the difference between the X6800 Extreme and the other 4mb L2 cache core 2 duo's? I always thought the 'Extreme' was just more L2 cache, but if the new 'Extreme's' have the same L2, why pay $1000 when you can get a E6400 for $315 and pump it up?

I'm an AMD fanboy, but if Intel puts out a beast like this for the price they're asking, you've gotta be on some serious drugs to pass this bye. I've been using AMD for a few years now, time to figure out how to OC an Intel rig... 8)

Oh, yeah... anyone have a favorite LGA775/Core 2 Duo mobo, talkin' high-speed type, overclocking beast?
