Hey there everyone,

So, I have had this Windows 8 ASUS computer for about a year now, never had any big problems with it. Recently, I was on Steam, I started dark souls, it started normally, then all of a sudden, the screen turned teal-ish and the speakers were making a screeching noise. The computer then crashed.

Now, when it starts, the computer displays the ASUS screen (where you can press f8 to go to BIOS). When I don't press f8, it brings me to the BIOS screen anyways, it will not start Windows up at all.

Not really sure what to do, searched Google high and low, and it seems no one else has had this problem, please help xD

When in the BIOS do you see any boot devices (in particular, the hard drive with Windows on it)?

You could run memtest to check if the memory is all right: http://www.memtest86.com/ (although, I'd go with guessing it's a hard drive issue over memory issue if everything is still booting to BIOS correctly) and there are probably bootable utilities for checking the hard drive to make sure it's okay as well.

I'm thinking it's a hdd issue because in the bios, it doesn't say a single thing about my hard drive, in the tools section it only has "asus easy flash 2 utility" and "Asus spd information"

I had a similar issue, and it was a corrupted Hard drive. I don't know what happened but I was playing Bioshock 2 and it froze. Wouldn't respond. After that I tried to restart it, and it wouldn't load the partition.

I have the same problem of a new asus desktop that won't get past the boot screens, and tools shows the same 2 items (easy flash 2 and spd). No sign of the hard drive, no instructions on how to boot, no evidence of windows yet though it is supposed to have windows 8.
One dvd in the box, labeled drivers, does not work to boot the device.

I had a similar issue. I knew it was a hardware issue so disconnected everything except usb dongle for wireless keyboard/mouse. Couldn't resolve even after wasting a week replacing parts. Turned out to be the one usb device I retained was causing the problem. Very frustrating but at least I learned something and my system is upgraded. I think I can cobble together a system from these and previous left-over components and donate it to a school or charity.

I have the same problem. Asus X551M. Boots to BIOS no matter what. Changed many settings but nothing worked. Reset to defaults. Did not work Used Windows 8 recovery Flash drive; goes to Troubleshooting mode. Will not refresh or reset - says there is no drive, but there is. Go to command prompt, list partitions and only the recovery partition exists. HELP!

In my case this was a confirmed motherboard fault. Had to ship to ASUS for an 'out of warranty' repair. Cost me $400 !

I'm thinking this is a common fault with this BIOS / Motherboard. ASUS should acknowledge this fault as a genuine 'manufacturing fault' and replace at their cost!

I count 7.... how many more failures out there have just been thrown in the bin or have not come to forums for help but gone straight to ASUS and PAID for a manufacturing fault to be repaired?!

This is bloody disgusting ASUS! Get your wallet out and start paying for your failed components!

My mom just encountered this on her ASUS netbook today.
I just got home from work, and took a look, and it only loads into BIOS; when I try to change the bootable disks, the only thing that shows up is the PXE boot (I forget what it says exactly), but it was intially set to disabled; I tried to enable it; system then attempts to boot from PXE, but says something about a missing drive; I've currently come to the conclusion of harddrive failure; hoping to test more on it tomorrow.

This does not apply to my situation. Windows 8 hard drives have EUFI partitions and the hard drive was seen.
Regarding your situation, if the computer tries to boot to PXE, that suggests that it is Windows 7 or below where you can set the boot device order. If your computer does not see any bootable drive at all, it will then try to boot from a network (PXE). I suggest you boot from a utility CD/DVD (such as Hirens boot disk) and try to access the hard drive. Windows 8 hard drives will normally be set for EUFI boot. It must have secure boot off and be set for Legacy boot before you can boot to a CD. The situation you describe does not necessarily mean the hard drive is bad.
I did all of that and tested the hard drive outside the machine. Regardless, all of these symptoms point to the BIOS being corrupted or setup incorrectly and does not see the drives. There may be a motherboard disk controller issue. I finally contacted ASUS. This particular computer was still under warranty and they didn't even bother to tell me how to fix it; they gave me an RMA to send it back. It was fixed and returned 1 week later for no charge.

my computer would only boot into bios after i had done a full format of the hd and deleted all the partitions and converted the drive to MBR using AOMEI assistant, all this i had done on my hp650 because my asus x551cap does not allow me to disable secure boot for reasons beyond me. i then installed win 8.1 which functions perfectly in terms of booting up in the hp650 and also dell inspiron n5040 but whenever i paced it back in the asus it would constantly boot into the bios screen.
The solution finally came 4 days later when i took out the hd and then used AOMEI assistant from another laptop to convert the drive to GPT and used the following procedure to create a efi partition that was missing and i had suspected that to be the source of the problem.

1. Boot with setup disk and enter rescue command prompt, run diskpart.exe, select disk then select my windows volume. Issue a shrink command as:

shrink desired=600

run ‘list disk’ again, now I can see I have 600MB free space on the disk.

2. Then create and format the EFI partition:

create partition efi size=260
format quick fs=fat32 label="System"

create partition msr size = 128

3. Finally follow this post, run:

bootrec /fixboot
bcdboot c:\Windows /s b: /f ALL

to fix boot record.

4. Lastly for those who enabled hyper-v, run:

bcdedit /set {default} hypervisorlaunchtype Auto
bcdedit /set {default} nx OptIn

took out the hd plugged it backed into the asus from the dell n now im using the asus to type this.
Hope this helps someone out there.

Seems I can join the chorus here of folks who have been done in by ASUS.
I just did a clean install of Windows 8 and am finding the boot problem persists. Has there been any movement on the part of ASUS to take responsibility? After finding their customer service completely useless on the phone or in chat, I'm ready for so sort of consumer advocacy (if that's possible).

I paid over $2,000 for ASUS G75VW to support business development. I'm doing all of this on disability income to try to get on my feet again. I certainly do not have any more money to shell out to ASUS. My computer simply will not boot Windows most of the time, ONLY the Aptio Setup Utility menu. Really disappointed here.

I wish I had the skill set to do what you did here.. What's the deal with ASUS. I will never buy another ASUS product.

I had the exact same problem with mine but before the crash it came up with "the blue screen" saying CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED. So i did a complete format and re-installed windows. I firstly did some research and some answers said it could be a HDD problem. After seeing this i took apart the laptop and checked the HDD connections and everything seemed to be working fine. After a week or so of use, after re-installation the problem started again. Now completely fed up i bashed my laptop where the HDD was located and then i turned it on and everything started perfectly. Since then it has worked fine with the odd start up showing no operating system. The one thing i noticed is that i had to start up the computer on a flat surface and if i didn't, it would go into the BIOS. Odd right?
Maybe this was complete luck but it works.
Good luck

Hello all, I had the same issue with my ASUS laptop, I narrowed it down to the hard drive. I took the hard drive apart and found that the a plastic spacer that sets the read write heads in the correct position was loose due to the screw that holds it in position. I still had to replace the hard drive, but this seams to be a manufacturer issue. You may want to disassemble the hard drive and tighten the screw that holds the head alignment. This may fix the problem. Hope this helps. If you need any further info please let me know. Happy computing to you all. Facade out.

I just had the same issue this morning.. My mom brought me her ASUS laptop that would not boot past BIOS screen.. Messed with it for a few minutes.. On the main screen the OS selected was Windows 8.1 .. with only 7 or 8.1 as options. The laptop was upgraded to W10, but when I changed the BIOS to Windows 7, it booted normally.. Worth a shot if you haven't tried :)

This work like a charm!

What I did exactly:
1) Enabling "launch CSM" in BIOS
2) Then "launch PXE OpROM" apeears, enable it too.
3) Reboot

I got straight to my new replacement SSD.

After all, I went back to BIOS to disable the SSD cache drive.

Me too......................

I have an Asus AiO ET2221A upgraded from Win8.1 to 10 3 months ago, and today only boots into EUFI BIOS screen.

I was able to run Memtest from a DVD - fine, but couldn't boot into Hirens on USB or DVD. The BIOS does list the hdd partitions, plus I can search the hdd folders from within BIOS(!!); not that it helps.

I did remove and run Chkldsk on anther PC which showed/replaced several errors (20 bad sectors). I also loaded the latest BIOS download onto the hdd which in theory I can access from within BIOS. However after replacing the hdd after the chkdsk repair, it still wouldn't boot into Windows.

I am surprised as I would expect the BIOS to report it can't find the Windows (if it is the disk), rather than stick in BIOS without any diagnostics.

So I am still in a quandary as to whether this is a BIOS issue or a HDD issue, plus by upgrading from 8.1 to 10 the latter usually corrupts the Windows recovery partition.

Edit: I have subsequently m,ade some progress as I have been able to get the system to boot from the Hirens disk; however as soon as XPO loads the USB mouse/keyboard are turned off. All I did was to disable secureboot in BIOS and change the boot order.

Do you think this implies its a hdd problem, rather than a BIOS problem?
