ConfigStartup operation - help!!

Hi
when I look at Startup in MSconfig, I notice that there five entries that
are not necessary so I tried to delete them.

I de-ticked the box for each of them and clicked apply. I then re-started
and the usual screen came up telling me that I was using a modified Startup.
I t ticked the box to say that I did not want the screen to show up the next
time. However every time I start up, it does show up.

In addition to this the five entries in Startup that I de-ticked are nor
ticked again.

These Items are no longer on my computer and I have even gone into System
registry HKLM\software\MSwindows\current version\run to delete all five
items.

I come out of the registry and check the Startup again only to find that the
entries that I de-ticked are now ticked again and still there. I look into
the registry and find that the items are back in there also and have not been
deleted.

I have also looked at this with Startup Inspector programme. Thsi shows me
that the five items in question "the file does not exist"

Even deleting them with Startup Inspector does not get rid of them.

Three of the files are:

c:\program files\microsoft antispyware\gcasServ.exe
C:\program files\executive software\diskeeper\DKICON.exe
%system root"\system32\dumprep 0-K
and also a ticked entry with nothing in the COMMAND COLUMN but a registry
location (as is all of them) of HKLM\software\ms windows\current version\run

Why, if the files do not exist, can i not delete them
Why, if I delete them in the registry, do they keep comming back.
Has anyone any idea as to what is going wrong and how I can rectify this.

Rich Barry - thanks for your response - I know what they are and I have
deleted both the programs from the system in the correct manner and the only
evidence of them left on the system is the entries in the STARTUP and the
REGISTRY as I have stated. Having deleted them using the ADD/REMOVE, I would
have thought that they would have been deleted from the STARTUP. I
understand that there could be residual evidence in the REGISTRY but once I
go into the REGISTRY and delete as per my original thread, I would have
thought they would have stayerd deleted.

In addition to the above, I still cannot understand why, if I de-tick an
entry (and not just the two that you refer to) in STARTUP, why they are
reticked when I go into STARTUP after having rebooted.

That I suppose is what I realy am trying to get the answer to????

Don't mess with that stuff. The first one is your Microsoft
Antispyware and the second is Diskeeper defragger.
In order to remove them you have to uninstall the programs.

Hi

Rich Barry - I have done all that you say ( see my original thread) as it
should be, after de-ticking the various lines and then pressing "APPLY" the
system then askes you to restart. I do this and, as I told you, I go back
into the MSCONFIG\STARTUP, the entries are still there and still TICKED.

Further, the entries in the Registry are also there even after having
deleted them.

As I told you earlier, using a program called STARTUP INSPECTOR it tells me
that these entries are no longer valid entries but they are still there and I
can't get rid of them!!!

Check HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\Startupreg\gcasServ Folder. Delete it If there's a Diskeeper
folder there delete it also.
When you unchecked the gcasServ entry in MSConfig did you click on
Apply, Ok.
